What I did to fix the problem is that I downloaded a third party defrag utility that had a trial period. I used this to defrag the disc, uninstalled it and now windows defrag works. Sorry for not posting the solution. The only person who posted a response was xwb and (s)he didn't seem to...
xwb, I have waited about 3 hours and it will not start. All attempts while in administrator account. 67% free space on hd. This is really strange as I know defrag works because it will start on the zip drive but does nothing at all on c:.
Thanks xwb but it doesn't restart, it doesn't even run. I know defrag works because I can highlight the zip drive and it will start. If I highlight c: then it won't respond. It won't analyze and it won't start to defrag. It won't do anything.
I have a win 2k pro machine on which defrag won't start. This is not the problem where it starts and keeps stopping, it won't start at all. The machine has a zip drive and if I highlight that and click analyze or start, defrag will respond and analyze or start to defrag. If I highlight the c...
My two cents is that I was a long time user of Norton until I began having problems on many machines. The last time, I had two Win 2k machines that I installed NAV 2006 on and they would not run. Their tech support is pathetic. I spent two days on the phone with Symantec's level 0 support and...
Thanks wasisnt...I thought that this would work but I wasn't sure. I imagine that I will have to download all the windows updates but I would have to do that anyway if I did a fresh install.
I got a computer from someone that has a few programs and XP Pro installed. I got the programs with the computer, but the seller wanted to keep his XP Pro and so I purchased XP Pro for this computer.
The computer runs well and has no problems and I was wondering if I could put my disc in, boot...
If anyone is reading this and is having a similar problem, I figured out what to do to resolve my problem. I got the primary and secondary dns addresses from my isp, even though they said I wouldn't need them since I was on a dial-up account, and put them in for the network connection along...
Thanks for the links bcastner. I followed the directions thoroughly but no luck. I can't figure out why it suddenly worked when I enabled the guest account then quit again. I know there must be a setting somewhere. I tried different nics and nothing seems to work.
Thanks for your response bcastner. I saw on one of your other posts a bit about enabling the guest account. When I did that, the 2000 computer immediately could go onto the internet via the dialup on the xp machine. After a reboot, it no longer can. This is crazy. I have disabled the...
I am having a hard time here. I have one machine with xp pro and another with 2k. Dial up connection is on the xp machine. I have a linksys 5 port switch and am trying to set up a peer to peer network with internet connection sharing. I have done everything I can but neither machine can see...
Thanks BaudKarma. I'll reformat when I'm done and see what it says but I spect it's dust. I think it's out of warranty too now that WD only offers 1 year. Oh, well, drives are fairly cheap now, eh?
Thanks again.
BaudKarma, thanks. That's what I planned to do because of the S.M.A.R.T. error. I was concerned that xp pro might see itself on the other drive and wreak havok. So, I will go ahead and get this drive all done then hook the old one up as a slave, pull data over and make a quick exit. One last...
A few days ago, my 60gb Western Digital Eide hd gave me a S.M.A.R.T. error which was confirmed by their diagnostic software. I bought a new 80gb and have installed windows xp pro on it (same as the 60gb) both activated. I had the old drive set up with one partition which I decided was a...
Thanks linney and wolluf...it worked. I needed to have the old drive as a slave to pull the data over before wiping it. This is the first time I have done this in xp and the first time this way. I've done this in 2k by adding the slave after install, pulling data over then disconnecting and...
I bet that's it linney. I'm at work so I'll check when I get home. That makes sense to me. When I remove the slave and try to boot, I get a primary hd fail error so it is probably running off the slave.

I had a 20 gb hard drive with data on it and xp pro. I bought a new large hd and installed xp pro. All is well and I copied all my data over. When I unplug the slave, xp won't boot. Do I need to uninstall windows on the slave to avoid duplicate installations, reformat the slave so that xp...
bcastner: I think there may be something screwed up with something other than the os because I have been having troubles with permissions and recently reformatted and reinstalled everything. This is the only problem I have encountered.
I really don't care about Quicktime, but from time to time...
bcastner: Thanks for the tip. I'll download the prog and check it out. So if it is trying to modify a Run key, why couldn't it do it as I was logged in as an administrator when I installed it? Also, is there a method for changing permissions if it has more than a couple registry entries?
