Configuring client firewalls with PIX 6.X

Search was broken at the time of writing this, so I wasn't able to see if there were other articles about this already... ANYWAY, what we're working at is introducing firewalls between clients and the core, but we all only have experience with PIX 4.X, so we're thrown at how to do it with 6.X...

    OSPF Metric adjustment

Thanks Gabriel. None of the interfaces currently have a cost assigned. I can't find a reference to Cisco's default when there's no statement - do you know it? If not, I'll just go adding costs to all the interfaces for this destination across the two routers.

    OSPF Metric adjustment

Hi Gang We have an interesting issue that's cropping up on our core routers. There are 3 T1 lines to another of our offices, and because of the gatway config on many workstations, a single T1 on one core (a Cisco 7507) is being preferred for most of the traffic, leaving the other core router...

Blocking Chatting/Game use on a PIX

Hi All. As with many comapanies, our IT department was asked if it would be possible to block all chatting ports. Apparently a good deal of the employees were spending a little too much time talking with friends rather than working. The other senior admin and myself came up with the list of...

Cisco 2929 rebooting after LED Test!

ARG... well, first, there's no MODE button on it, second, I goofed - it's a 2926. I've tried using the reset button (which you can hold down using a pen tip), but that didn't resolve the issue either.

Cisco 2929 rebooting after LED Test!

Yes, everything was disconnected. We ever tried swapping out every conceivable part with another 2929 to identify the problem. The Sup. card itself seems to be the culprit, but that's the most we can derive from this.

Cisco 2929 rebooting after LED Test!

Nope... that won't work because you can't get any further than the led test. You turn it on, and it happens within a second or two of power - pretty much screws up your ability to do anything else. We've still not figured out what happened.

2501 Will not reload with startup config

Yeah, you may have to reset it. When the register's set to 0x2142, it will bypass the config stored in flash (basically just ignoring it). If you set the register back to 0x2102, it will read it on boot up again. To do that, get into enabled mode, then into the configuration mode, and type...

Cisco 2929 rebooting after LED Test!

Subject line pretty much tells all - it does the first test, a LED test, then reboots, and keeps doing that over and over until you unplug it. Any ideas? (it was working fine just over a week ago).

FastEthernet issue on a Cisco 3640

Hi everyone Earlier today I did an IOS upgrade for an ISP. They are using a Cisco 3640 router to handle all the routing done on their network. Each module bay is occupied by an Ethernet module of some type. Two contain single 10Mbit Ethernet modules, one has a 4 port 10Mbit module, and one...

    Alternate ways of load balancing?

All very good suggestions, but not quite related to what I needed (I'll keep that Multilink one in mind for something else though!). What we have is 2 2621's at the CBOE location, 2 T1's (1 each) at that end, and they all connect to one 3660 at the Chicago office. The most workable solution so...

    Alternate ways of load balancing?

We have 2 routers set up at the CBOE in Chicago. Each router is a Cisco 2621, and has a T1 line running into it. Currently, only one is in use. The original intent was to set up HSRP, but now the request has changed to load balancing. Normally, I would use EIGRP, but that is only to be used...

Problems with dual BRI on a NM-2W, 3660 router

We actually have Cisco involved in this case already. So far, they have made 6 or 7 attempts at solving this problem. The last effort involved shifting the register at boot-up to sort of side-step the configuration (it was the Cisco Tech's theory that the current config might be erroneous in...

Problems with dual BRI on a NM-2W, 3660 router

In two of our offices, we have 3660 MB-2FE routers. For line backups, we got a NM-2W module to place in the 4th bay, and in it put 2 WIC-1B-U cards (BRI ports with built in NT1s). The problem in both cases is that the router shows both BRI interfaces as 4/0, instead of 4/0 and 4/1. So far...

    Cisco PIX 515

Check out this page: http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/700/configsec.html Cisco has tons of sample configs up for the PIX series. Most of their stuff is pretty general, but it's easily modified to suit specific needs. Good luck!

Getting your Classic PIX Firewall to 400MHz!

In addition to the other postings on the Classic PIX, my gamble worked - and now I have a nice 400MHz PIX - read how I did it below: Contrary to what Cisco might tell you, it is possible to get your old Cisco PIX units working at up to 400MHz! Cisco classic firewalls are those with serial...

Another Classic PIX Firewall tip - cooling

As I mentioned in the little spurt before this, the older PIX firewalls have a horrible little heatsink. When you start running these Classics at full capacity, and keep them there, the 133 that powers them (or perhaps a different processor, depending on model) gets nice and hot. Here's a...

    Basic 2501 Config Question

Hmmm... well, first off, the router's Ethernet is pretyt much like a PC's - it uses a straigth-through patch cable to connect to a hub, not a X-over. What you might try, for the sake of testing, is getting a X-over cable and connecting the router directly to the PC. If you can ping, then the...

Cisco "Classic" PIX Firewalls Handy tips!

I ended up finding out a lot about the older Cisco Firewalls by weeding through Cisco's site. What we have is called a Cisco "Classic" PIX Firewall. Any PIX units with a serial # under 06002015 are under the "Classic" catagory. Our system had 8 megs of RAM, a 512k flash...

    Basic 2501 Config Question

A couple more points (dumb question, but possible) is there anything else plugged into the hub and is it on the same subnet as the address provided for your Ethernet0 on the 2501? Second, check the adapter to make sure it's functioning. A lot of them have little dip-switches that can easily be...
