After I posted here I got him to check /etc/security/passwd:
The stanza in /etc/security/passwd is as follows
root:
password =
flags =
lastupdate = 1062834442
So basically one of his operators removed the password accidently (fiddling) and probably didn't want to own up...
The the 8/9 users on the machine from the $ prompt can type su and be logged straight in as root without being asked for the password (a password is set). I would presume theres been an option changed in smit to allow users to do this? If so which is it so I can change it back.
Thanks in Advance
Thats sounds like a possibility and could be why this error has only started to show in the last few weeks as the file has increase over 2 GB.. I'll pass this onto the customer and see it it helps.
Thanks.
Getting any info is a pain, my company isn't directly supporting the machine, the company supporting it uses us as a third party and comes to us with issues they dont know how to solve. Basically the machine is reportiong back that the filesystem is full (4gb) when its actually only got a 2gb...
Heres the error report that i've just been sent.

Each night, as part of the backup script, we copy some large database files from a “live” filesystem to a “copy” filesystem. We then backup (using “tar”) from the “copy” filesystem. This is so the backups can continue whilst we reactivate access to the live databases.
This system has worked...
SOunds like the phone is connected in its own Phone port. Each phone socket in your house that you intend to use a phone in requires a ADSL Micro-Filter (about £4-5) this seperates the signal and will stop the ADSL line dropping when someone uses the phone.
New to Solaris.
Just need to know how to go about Setting up TCP/IP on my sun box. I cant seem to find an option to do it.
Can anyone help?
Thanks in advance
Now I'm getting a message saying "Use a Dos Format Disk" which is strange considering I used the Dos Format command on the Unix box to format the disk.
I've got a 1.44MB floppy disk that has a html file on it (created on a PC so the disk isn't in a UNIX format) that I want to copy onto my RS6000 43P but I cant remember the correct command to do this. Can someone help me please.

Instead of manually typing "errpt" at the command line to check the error reports on an AIX machine. IS there a simple way to automate this so that the machine alerts me when a new entry is written to it?
Thanks in advance.
Cheers for that :).
I've look at lots of software from many developers, but its mainly keyed to determining when filesystems are almost full, memory usage is very high etc etc.
I didn't think anything existed hardware wise, i've seen similar software used outside of this arena regarding...
Anyone know of an application that can be run on an AIX machine that can predict/report failing hardware before it happens (not really looking for a geenie in a bottle just a bit of a headstart/prewarning). It needs to be able to send the info from the machine via e-mail or even txt the...
As said if its a new machine it should have come pre-loaded with AIX 5.1, or at least arrived with a copy of the OS on CD for you to install. Check back with your supplier and see what they say.
Installed a new IBM Nighthawk Node yesterday got AIX 4.3.3 loaded etc etc. The customer has phoned me today asking how to enable the Fast IPL function. Normally on most RS's you bring the machine down to the OK/Standby prompt and press enter to bring up a set of offline options one of these is...
