Hey all. We just got delivery of a new pSeries and finished installing it but discovered they forgot to preload AIX 4.3.3. When we tried to install the OS ourselves the server would hang after the initial "Welcome to AIX..." message after "booting" from the CD-rom. IBM support says the new pSeries servers aren't supported by anything lower then AIX 4.3.3 with maintenance level 9 and we can't use anything lower to install. The problem is we only have an older version... and since we can't install with an older version we can't later apply the maintenance level separately. Installing 5L is not an option. What can we do?

Send it back?

They should have pre-loaded 5.1 on there. We have a p660 and p670 and all nodes are running AIX5 because it was pre-loaded. You could call IBM and get a refresh of the OS because when you buy the machines you get a copy of the operating system. You don't say why 5.1 is not an option. The other thing you could do is to use another machine and do a fresh install of AIX 4.3.3 then install ML10 on there and then use that to install the new machines.

hi ,

What type of P series server is it ?

Have you got a similar sever else where ?

if so you can boot off OS CD and restore mksysb of that server onto this server

As said if its a new machine it should have come pre-loaded with AIX 5.1, or at least arrived with a copy of the OS on CD for you to install. Check back with your supplier and see what they say.
