Shut Down Has Vanished From My Start Menu

Strangely, shutting down via Task Manager and then rebooting did whatever was necessary for the change I made to the registry to take effect and "Shut Down" to return to the Start Menu. At least I think that's what caused it. Could be that only the Computer God knows. Thanks all, Brody

Shut Down Has Vanished From My Start Menu

Thanks PAnderson. The good news is that I found the key and changed it as you suggested. The bad news is that it didn't return "shut down" to the Start Menu or allow any right clicking on Start Menu items. However, it turns out that Task Manager had also been screwed up--Shut Down was grayed...

Shut Down Has Vanished From My Start Menu

Sat down today and booted my Windows ME machine as always, except that it came up with an error message (no, I didn't write down what it was) and wouldn't boot. Rebooted into Safe Mode and everything seemed fine--except that the "Shut Down" item was missing from the Start Menu and when I...

    Power Management Problem

Uh-oh, I was wrong about power management working again. That is, it works, but it doesn't work properly. The situation now is that power management turns off my monitor after the appropriate length of time, but only if every time I boot up (which since the box is always up means every time I...

    Power Management Problem

Thanks for the responses. As luck would have it, the power management works again, mysteriously starting the same way it stopped last week. Windows! Brode

    Power Management Problem

I've been using the Power Management settings in my Micron Win 98 SE machine for many years with no problem, but last week they decided not to work. To be precise, I've always had the system set up to turn off the monitor after 45 minutes of inactivity and it's always done that--till now. Now...

    Shutdown Problem

Thanks to everyone for all their suggestions on my Windows Shut Down problem, most of which I tried and most of which seemed to work for awhile, but only for awhile. I think I've gotten to the bottom of things now and want to pass on what I've learned. An employee loaded a file-sharing program...

    Shutdown Problem

Thanks, everyone. Using the msconfig technique I unchecked what turned out to be more than one program being loaded and unloaded twice, and using the technique of going through one program after another via task manager and turning them off I've gotten things sorted out. The program that...

    Shutdown Problem

Hohum, another day, another Win 98 SE problem. You'd think I'd be used to it by now. After years of faithful service, my system is now giving me grief when I try to shut down or restart. It goes to the "windows is shutting down" window and there it stays until I power down and then...

America Online Has Japed Me Again

The shortcut connects to an exe file. I have no qualms about deleteing exe files but would like to make sure said file is out of the registry as well.

America Online Has Japed Me Again

AOL drives me crazy, even though I don't use it. I do use the stand-alone version of Instant Messenger to talk to my kids who are scattered all over the globe though. In spite of having been burned by AOL in various ways for years I keep thinking "maybe this time I can upgrade and things...

    Java Virtual Machine Problem

Thanks, Cirrus9, but strangely--or maybe not--I solved my problem via a backdoor. I decided to try Netscape and see what happened. I got the same message but this time it took me to Sun, where I downloaded their java virtual machine equivalent and installed it. It works in IE as well and I can...

    Java Virtual Machine Problem

Hi all. After a bout of hard drive deletions and uninstalls I find that I've gone too far. Whenever I go to certain sites I get the message that I can't see the page unless I download Microsoft Java Virtual Machine. I'm then asked to click on a page that will install said missing Java Virtual...

    IE Start Page Problem

Well, I've run the download and it says that now everything is clean. Thanks mucho. The question still arises--how did I get those viruses? I'm on a small network--three computers. If someone on another connected computer got the virus, would it have spread to my machine? Guess it's time to...

    IE Start Page Problem

All right, I've put myself in your hands. Ran the hijacker fix and did a scan with Panda, which found 24 infected files and cleaned them. This surprised me for two reasons. First, Norton Anti-Virus said I had no infected files. Second, and I'm sure you've heard this before, I never open an...

    IE Start Page Problem

This is very interesting, Steam. I'm uneasy about publicizing all this information, but here's the log: Logfile of HijackThis v1.97.2 Scan saved at 3:48:54 PM, on 10/1/2003 Platform: Windows 98 SE (Win9x 4.10.2222A) MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP1 (6.00.2800.1106) Running processes...

    IE Start Page Problem

I already had Adaware in my system so I ran that and deleted a few files that, by their names, seemed harmless--but who could know. Then I used CacheX to empty my cache of temp internet files. And then I went though all my cookies with Toss Your Cookies and took out every cookie from a site I...

    IE Start Page Problem

For no reason that I can think of IE 6 has been "compromised" so that no matter what Start Page I set, as soon as I reboot the Start Page becomes www.luckysearch.net, a site I've never knowingly been to. It seems to be connected somehow to the "about:blank" option. That is...

running Windows 98 SE and have two

I'm running Windows 98 SE and have two copies of Eudora 6.0. All I want to do is uninstall one of them because it's no longer necessary. The problem, though, is that when I go to add/remove programs in Windows 98 Control Panel I see two Eurdoras ("Eudora" and "Eudora...
