Exchange 2000 default permissions say that only the user of the mailbox has permissions to the box. You need to go in and give the backup exec service account permissions to the mailbox. Then it should let you restore it.
I can do a brick level backup of the exchange database, but when i try and backup the information store fails and the job never finishes. I have to stop the services to get the job to cancel. There is another file that the server does the same thing on. Other than those to things the backup...
GO into the system Manager, expand Administrative Groups, expand down to your server and then you information store. Right click and go to properties. then check the box that says archive all messages for this store. Then pick the account to archive them to.

The easiest way it to just put Outlook 97, or 98 on there. But if you really want just the client then i believe that it is on the Exchange 5.5 server disk. The Exchange client 4.0 is located here on the disk \SERVER\SUPPORT\EXCH40\I386

It is not Outlook you need, but the Exchange client. Outlook 97 and 98 contain the client but, I guess, that Outlook XP does not.
The reason the Exchange client is needed to to have something on the machine that the backup agent can connect to the mailboxes with.
As for security with Outlook...
Need a little more info: How many machines are we talking about here? And what OS is being used...98, ME, 2000 etc. See if you can figure out if it is a connection and configuration problem on the machine or is it a problem with the user accounts.

I know that some backup programs require that you send the account, in which you created for your backups, an email to intialize it.

Thanks for the reply. I guess what i missed there was the fact that Arcserve 2000 needs to be installed, then SP3 and THEN the exchange client. In that order. I will uninstall and reinstall everything and try it tonight and see if that fixes my problem. Thanks again for the help.
