Solved it! Once I had told Star the IP address of the external server/host, it works fine. Apparently their (our) router doesn't use a stateless firewall so has to know the external IP. Not sure what this means apart from it now works! thanks all Jon

Solved it Had to use a 3com OfficeConnect Ethernet Hub BC to join the two media types. Works a treat. Seems a media converter isn't up to it for some reason. thanks all Jon

have just tried connecting just my lappy to the coax network via the switch and a media converter. All it can then see is the nt4 server and all the workstations in the domain. not unix boxes or the router are pingable! i am confused!
