I have of course done the obvious things like turned the slider in MODEM PROPERTIES to the off position and also tried adding the string "M0" capital M and number zero, in the advanced.
Thanks Bill, but as you can see, I've tried everything I know, I just thought that soemone might...
Thanks to all who have tried, especially latest contributors ITSWORK & BNORCUTT, but still the noise remains. Anybody out there know a registry hack?
Cheers

I thought I might bump this one back to the top for further consideration.
Let me add that I have "rolled back" to the previous modem driver which stopped working, and had to do a system restore. It's working again now, but still noisy. I did try the added string L1 which stopped...
Never had this problem before, but I recently upgraded from Win98 to XP. I also changed from a micro on board modem to a PCI card modem, in particular a Connexant. Since installing and updating the driver from Windoze, the modem won't turn off the sound from the PC internal speaker, not stereo...
Mattjurado - I thank you for your comments, however the problem was not cured. This refers to XP not Win9x, the difference being that My Network Places in XP doesn't show a "sound slide" just a radio button to either enable/disable modem speakers.
Ali Koumaiha - sounds great but when...

Hi Nad
Try this link:

I would also be inclined to post this message on the WinXP forum.

Since posting this question, I have changed absolutely nothing on the PC concerned, and the problem has gone away. I can only conclude that the problem was never with my machine, but with my ISP. Has anyone else suffered from these ad hoc problems?
Also, I noticed today that my firewall...
OK, the effects of WE ISO are that when a page loads in the wrong language, in nanoseconds I see a page of placeholders rather than graphics and frames rather than a layout. Simply by clicking VIEW - ENCODING and selecting WEW it reloads correctly until the next page and I have to repeat the...
I'm not sure where this one should go, but I have a problem surfing. Pages that I visit, download incorrectly, i.e. Western European ISO rather than Western European Windows. I have Autoselect checked and I can just refresh having checked the correct encoding, but why does it default to the...
Hi Terrythetrain
Sounds like it could be a virus. Have you done an online scan with Trend Housecall?

Other than that, I would check set options within XP.

Should have said also that I went into real DOS and ran Fdisk. That tells me the the disk is 20Gb and 100% used as a logical DOS partition. So it looks like a Windoze problem.

Well! I tried making the dodgy HDD primary master and booting from a Win98 startup disk. No way Jose, just kept saying invalid system disk, replace it and hit any key. I then decided to change BIOS boot sequence and boot from CDROM - success!!
Win98 CD tells me that the partition is bad, not...
Thanks for that. I noticed that the drive I have is listed there as being one of the faulty batch.
I have however cheated just a bit, I booted with the original 2nd HDD and whilst the PC was on, disconnected the 2nd HDD and plugged in the new 2nd HDD and did a format. The only problem was...
Hi Whee Doggy
I've just tried your suggestion of selecting NONE in BIOS. On boot it just ignored it, so it didn't work.
One thing I did notice is that when it is detected in BIOS, I see the name FUJITSU and then some serial numbers followed by a gap and a capital E on the end. I've not seen...
Hi Everyone
My home PC has 2 HDD's (C: and D:). My friend was having major problems with his only HDD and was unable to even format it and start over.
I suggested that I took it and put it into my PC as a Primary Slave and then format it and reload with Win98. I changed the jumper settings...
