No, I don't think that's the problem. Try to run the latest software available (insure you remove the old one first) and reboot the system. Only connect the USB cable when the system asks for it.
You could try to check permissions on that drive. If users have network drives mapped in the computers it may be a protection so that users can't change anything on the hd.
