    I was able to use the List Toolbar on an XML file - just used it to sum (or average) each column, then outside the list I just entered a SUM formula for the ranges I wanted. Not as good as Data, Subtotals, I will admit, but still viable.

    Just to clarify, your 3rd sheet should have the formula: =EXACT(Sheet1!A1,Sheet2!A1) to compare two sheets.

    I hope it isn't "lknasdf"! As long as we're on the subject, is there a way to use sumproduct to count all the cases where the two do not match? That is, to use the example above, to get a return of 2 (for rows 1 and 3)?

    Sumproduct is great when you want to specify the exact items, as appears to be the case here, you are right, except your formula should be =sumproduct((A1:A10="A")*(B1:B10="A")) to count the times where A occurs in both columns. Thanks for the advice, though - sumproduct is a powerful formula item.

    Well, this is sloppy, and I am sure someone else knows a better way, but you could have a column listing =EXACT(A1,B1), =EXACT(A2,B2), etc, and then have a cell with (for your given example) =COUNTIF(C1:C3,TRUE) This will return a count of 1.

    COUNT(range) will count the non-empty cells, and COUNTIF(range,"") will return the number of empty cells, so =(COUNT(A1:H1)+COUNTIF(A1:H1,"")) should do the trick.
