We're running Office 97 SR-2 on Windows 2000 and Windows XP machines and we frequently run into the issue where documents from MS Word cannot be saved to Novell network drives. Excel, Access, PowerPoint, WordPad, etc. all seem to save fine. However, when I go to save a Word doc I get the following message:

====================================
This is not a valid filename.
Try one or more of the following:
* Check the path to make sure it was typed
correctly.
* Select a file from the list of files and
folders.
====================================

I can save to a local drive with no problem and then move the file to the nework location, but we're just too lazy to do all of that extra work!

Have you tried saving the file using the 8.3 filename format?????

If your other programs store data ok on your network, there shouldn't be any reason why your Word docs's don't either.

AND IF you can't fix the problem, you can always set up a batch file and shortcut on the desktop that will take all your Word files and copy them to the network all at once.

I've tried 8.3 format and we get the same results. I thought of the batch file solution, but it just doesn't seem very plausible due to the fact this is happening to about 20-25 PC's and I'm sure will continue to happen as we upgrade the other 100 or so and some of the people here are "non-trainable". Right now the temporary fix is to use the Briefcase or drag-and-drop.

Have you tried re-installing Word???? That might fix your problem.

Reinstall doesn't clear up the problem either even after cleaning the registry.

Under Tools, Options, Files locations are you able to browse to your network drive? Perhaps you could change your default location to there and see what happens...

I've had this issue before, and for me it was a network connectivity issue. Upgrading the NICs helped my problem. I'd recommend going with an upper-end NIC like Intel or 3Com, and stay away from Netgear or Linksys. It's worked for me.

I think I've solved the problem. I went to an older version of the Netware Client and so far everything seems to be working properly.
