That sounds like a lot of work man. Just fire up the old BBQ and get some natural textures and mask them or whatever. There is no substitute-

Play with it man, thats what it's all about. if you have to look at some commercials on TV for ideas. you can do a lot just using variations of position and opacity on multiple copies of the same layer. Get an AE book if all else fails it is worth it. They are on Half.com fairly cheap.

I'm interested in how to set up a pixel follow as well and how the shot should be set up to do so. Ex. Putting a bright red hat on subject in video media when shooting then somehow tracking that hat and making text follow it. This is a gay example I know but you get the idea-

You should use the "numbers" effect on a solid and generate it that way keyframing at the 1 sec and 10 sec mark within the VALUE OFFSET.
