Check the View settings within Outlook to double check you are not inadvertantly filtering unread emails (View - Current View).

If you're using MS Outlook 2000 as your email client then install the Outlook 2k Email Security Update, its included in Office 2k Service Pack 2. This blocks attachments which MS deem as unsafe, such as .exes and .bats and .scrs and also includes .pif files. See MS KB262631 for full list.
