This sounds like an issue with logfiles growing out of control. Are you running a backup regularly? If not - there are a set of files that will be duplicates of the files that are in the database. I've seen some server with 8gb of actual mail data and 42gb of .log files.

One thing that you can do, is just check the headers on an e-mail that you send yourself from the machine you want to get to. Somewhere in the headers you'll find the address of the machine that the world sees. This is no help if the machine is behind PAT, which is one to many IP address...

I would suggest that you check into whether you want your cable modem changed out. The newer ones that are out there don't usually move layer 2 traffic like ARPs between different machines.

Tough turkey is that you ultimately need a VPN to run a direct exchange connection like it sounds like you want to run. Check out MS RRAS or some other better VPNs out there.
