i'll have to run down to the machine during the user's lunch break to get it. the last time i did an ipconfig /all while troubleshooting it did show the correct DNS/WINS information for the client. i'll post back here in a little bit.
hello bcastner,
the DNS client service is started and running along with DHCP, SERVER, and WORKSTATION services. i made the change on the DHCP server to let the clients register with DNS now to see if anything would change and so far it hasn't worked.
hello,
i have a few PC's (15 or so running 2K and XP) that are not registering into DNS. ipconfig /all for the clients show they are correctly pointed to the internal DNS and WINS servers. the DHCP server is set to always update DNS for the clients. when pinging of course the NETBIOS name is...
thanks for the reply buddafish. i finally found an article that confirms what you said, the server should be pointed to itself only. it's funny how there are so few documents that point things out like this and when you find them its by accident, thanks again!
if this has been asked many times before i apologize. i've been looking for an answer as to how a WINS server should be configured. currently our two production boxes are set in the follwing manner -
WINS server 1
WINS tab > WINS addresses, in order of use:
WINS server 1 IP
WINS server 2 IP...
an idea i saw somewhere else
"Create an address lease that's invalid for your network, & reserve it to the MAC address of the laptop. They'll still get an address leased to them, but not one that will allow them to communicate to the rest of the network (or even out to the internet)."

this DC was set-up by another person who is no longer here btw. i am cleaning up his messes that i find along the way and this was one of them. SP4 was installed late friday night, checked this morning it looks cool. will monitor the next few days and post back...
it's possible that scavenging may not be running. check to see if it is turned on for the forward and reverse lookup zones. if not, turn it on and accept the defaults of 7 days for each listing. hope this helps...
UPDATE:
the server is running SP3. i am updating to SP4 tonight, but the culprit looks like the rpcss services is dying on the DC. i'll post back here in a few days to let everyone know how it goes...

Found the area in the registry where the routes would be hiding: (HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\
PersistentRoutes
there was nothing there :-(
anyone else know of anything? RRAS is not configured. Where are these entries coming from?
...detailing 13508 and 13509, also have a better understanding of replication under the hood my head hurts. netstat shows:
TCP 0.0.0.0:135 0.0.0.0:0 LISTENING
UDP 0.0.0.0:135 *:*
Also checked DNS and the information is there for the server unless there is something else I should look for?
Thanks for the reply, I have been working so hard on this issue for several days now. OK, where do I begin? The os of the servers is 2K and the clients are 2K/XP. The DC that is unable to complete the RPC connection is logging ID 13508. The problem seems to be FRS related, I ran the NTFRSUTL...
Have you tried manually entering in the DNS server addresses into the clients? This has worked for me several times. Also, I think there is a way to enable logging (I know you can do it for the DCPROMO process) and maybe this would tell us what is happening. But usually this is a DNS issue.
Thanks for the reply, I wish it was that simple. I have already tried this and the routes are persistently listed after bouncing the server. I wonder if there is a file on the hard drive that is getting loaded. If anyone else knows anything I would greatly appreciate it. I think this is...
Hello,
On one of my remote DC's there are about 40 different
entries in the routing table to an old router address. At
the CMD prompt I type the commands to delete the routes,
do a ROUTE PRINT to confirm they are taken out but they
keep coming back. Is there a file locally on the server...
