Yeah, I'm in the same damned boat, Robert. However, I live in the middle of Florida where if you can't drive a big rig AND own an airboat, you're scum. So I have to start looking at driving like 50 miles one way just to get an IT job. The current trend in this area goes like this:
I saw an ad...
Well, she loved it. She has never seen a UNIX screen before. She didn't know that a command line could be so interactive. She watched it run again on Sunday, and again on Monday morning...I think she really liked it. Thanks for the everyone. It really paid off [thumbsup2] Hope I was of some...
I have a laptop with a 633 Cely and 64 MB RAM. What I am trying to do is elminate Windows all together. Not that I don't like Windows, 2000 0wnz, but I just want to see if I can do it. So here's where I'm stuck:
The laptop has FreeBSD 5.0/Windows 2000 on it. All is well. Except in BSD, XServer...
Well, I've been thrown to the wolves once again...
I built a site from phpnuke on a FreeBSD server. All was well. The the senior sysadmin decided to move everything over to Windows 2000 (VPN, DNS, web, FTP, mail, everything). I guess he was feeling inadiquite because I was the only one who knew...
Hmm...I think you got a bad memory stick or something. Try changing it. I have FreeBSD running on production servers with more than 1G RAM, and all the way down to a laptop with less than 64MB RAM. All of them run great. Hope I was of some help...

Personally, I use Windows servers for internal stuff, and FreeBSD for the real world (yeah, eat that MS!!). What about Samba and NFS? Hope I was of some help...

Did you edit the supfile and change host "CHANGE_THIS" to something like host "cvsup3.freebsd.org"?
I'm behind a router too, and I don't have any trouble.
I did before I edited the supfile though...lol. Hope I was of some help...

Sure there is. But could you be a little more specific? Like which ports do you need open, when and why, and which ones you need closed, etc..
There are so many ways to do it, it'll make your head spin. Hope I was of some help...

Thanks for all the help. And not yet, I didn't show her. I'll show her this Saturday (IF I can get my laptop fixed by then, the screen hinge is wore out again). I'll let you all know what she thinks of it. ;) Hope I was of some help...

hello
I looked and looked and looked, and I can't find an answer specific to my problem.
I am moving an entire site from a UNIX box to a Windows 2000 server (I know, ick, but it's not my descision). This Windows box is pretty secure though, IIS, RPC, and all the remote sploits are gone (we...
OK, how do I get this:
while (:); do echo -n . && sleep 1;done
to stop after like 5 seconds? Hope I was of some help...

thanks, I found a site that covers some of what I want to do, but there are two things I want to do that I can't figure out:
change the font color
make the lines print one character at a time on the same line...
can I do that by just going liek this?
echo "H" sleep 1 echo...
I need to make a file that when run, it just echos text, and can wait a few seconds. I need it to spit out a line, go to a new line, spit out some more, wait, then spit out another few lines, etc. like when you're booting a kernal.
Different colors and stuff would be nice too.
I don't know...
I've been trying to get webalizer to run so I get fresh data every 10 minutes or whatever. I'm stuck. Can someone give me the vilage fool's rundown on how to do that?
Sytem: FreeBSD 4.7

Hello...
I am fairly new to Linux...I put RedHat 7.3 on my laptop in the hopes of greater stability and so I can learn something other than Windows.
My trouble is that this laptop is running so so so slow. It takes like 30-45 seconds for Konquere to open.
Here's my hardware:
