I use Office 2003 on Windows XP. I downloaded FileFormatConverters.exe from Microsoft and installed it. I am puzzled to be offered Office 2007 updates. Are these needed for security issues with Office 2003 or the file format converters? I was offered these updates while I was using Office 97...
No they're not. I have tried to remove them from my profile but without success. The computer in question is a 2011 vintage Sony VIAO laptop. The outcome is that I realise that the poor failing hard disk must have caused loss of data and a subsequent failure when running SFC /scannow (as...
Looking in winsxs, I see that the most recent windows updates are dated 13 September 2014.

The Background Intelligent Transfer Service and Windows Update Service are running. No automatic updates are forthcoming. I am unable to use Windows Update and the Windows Update GUI shows a red shield with a white cross on it. Is this a known problem and are there any fixes available? I...
You read it right BigBadBen. What is puzzling me is that drivers from impeccable sources (such as Microsoft and AVG) seem not to be recognised as 'signed'. Still, the system runs OK.
Microsoft does the signing and firms like AVG pay Microsoft to do it. Isn't that the way it works?
Owzat! On...
The 'Non-Driver Signing' registry was absent so I created it. I can now set Driver Signing Properties to 'Ignore' instead of 'Prompt' in Control Panel->System Properties and the change is persistent.
Unfortunately, the sledgehammer did a lot of damage to the computer case. [wink]

Thank you for responding BigBadBen.
'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Driver Signing' contains value names '(Default)' which has a value of '(value not set)' (type REG_SZ) and 'Policy' which has a value of 1 (type REG_BINARY). That is all...
Windows XP Pro on one of my machines repeatedly asks for confirmation that drivers, which I know are of good provenance (e.g. from Microsoft and AVG), are OK to use. I tried setting Driver Signing Properties to 'Ignore' instead of 'Prompt' in Control Panel->System Properties but the change...
Thanks. I finally decided to disable Indeo with a Microsoft Fixit #50326. It is Windows XP Pro SP3 which is why I was mystified by the refusal.
Owzat! On ya way, back to the pavilion!
This is the fix for a vulnerability in the Indeo codec which could allow remote code execution. Trouble is that it will not install.

Thank you vacunita. That is a lot to think about. I last did some web site authoring in June 2010. Everything with Homesite worked OK then. The problem has arisen since and with the knowledge of what has changed on the system I can only think that a Microsoft update since June 2010 has...
Since the middle of last year, a Windows update (unknown) has broken HTML help. Programs like Dreamweaver 4 and Homesite no longer have direct access to HTML based help. With Homesite, a message box appears informing me of an Invalid Floating Point Operation.
There have been 48 Windows...

There is a known problem with this security update.

Patch Tuesday - KB2483513 and shimgvw.dll
This security update appears to fail. The update is unable to overwrite shimgvw.dll in %SystemRoot%\system32.
I guess that this is the fix for the FAX image problem in which case it is not too important.
I do not suppose that the deaf monolith which...
Thanks guys. It was quite by accident that I stumbled on it but when it happened it was a Eureka moment. The system behaves absolutely beautifully now. Wish I had found it earlier. I will never know how the service start mode for Terminal Services was changed (if it ever was).
Owzat! On ya...
PROBLEM NOW FIXED
I eventually found why this happened. I discovered that Terminal Services was set to start Automatically. I changed this to Manual start and everything now behaves perfectly.

IE8 cannot reach http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com
The malware infection has been cleaned but there is a legacy of inaccessible sites, notably the Windows update site.
Automatic updates has also been sabotaged.
I need to know where to look to remove the blocking information.
Thanks...
The system resets - the screen goes black and the system reboots. This behaviour only seems to occur when a web browser (either IE7, Opera or Chrome) is being used.
The fact that the system is so radically affected makes me think that something at a low level like a network card driver is...
In the properties of Primary IDE channel of IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers advanced settings, the transfer mode for device 0 is PIO. Device type 0 is Auto Detection. I want to make this SATA drive be recognised as Ultra DMA capable. Any ideas what I should be prodding?
