    Pix 501 PDM update

You have to have a valid smartnet contract attached to your CCO login ID. That's the only way you can download stuff from Cisco.

Veritas 9.1 SP4a breaks Linux agent backup

Anyone else experience this? I start with a fresh install of Backup Exec 9.1 on Windows 2003 SP1. Make a simple backup job to disk that backs up files on a Linux machine running the latest UNIX agent. Everything works fine. Then I install service pack 4a for Backup Exec 9.1, reboot, come...

Windows server in DMZ going over PIX 515E to obtain Norton updates

Well, I have the following for DMZ hosts: access-list acl_dmz permit tcp xxx.xxx.xxx.0 255.255.255.0 any eq www access-list acl_dmz permit tcp xxx.xxx.xxx.0 255.255.255.0 any eq https access-list acl_dmz permit tcp xxx.xxx.xxx.0 255.255.255.0 any eq ftp With those lines, I have no problems...

Windows Remote Desktop - is it secure?

Yup. I guess what I'm getting at, is if your VPN (which is only a tunnel) is using the same auth mechanism as the server(s) you're connecting to, what's the difference? PIX with Aladdin smartcard is what I use. However, I don't see the point in going to all that trouble in a lot of cases when...

Windows server in DMZ going over PIX 515E to obtain Norton updates

    1. For a managed environment, you MUST have NT domains or Active Directory working. If not, you're wasting your time. 2. Otherwise, you should just be able to load the Anti-Virus CLIENT, and configure that machine with the client to automatically go out to Symantec's site on the internet and...

Windows Remote Desktop - is it secure?

The better option would be to use Terminal Services on the server side with W2K3 SP1 installed, then force the user to provide either smart card and/or a FIPS-compliant login (digital certificate of some kind). Quite frankly, I think this approach is MORE secure than a VPN, since most VPN's...

    Domain-Name change

It matters in that if you are using PDM or SSH, you will need a private key generated for the PIX based on it's new domain name. If you change the domain name and then try to connect via SSH, I'm pretty sure it won't let you.

Windows server in DMZ going over PIX 515E to obtain Norton updates

Well, I have a question. What's the protocol by which the server in the DMZ is supposed to get antivirus updates? Is it http, ftp, https...what is it? When you install the corporate or enterprise edition of Symantec Antivirus (who makes Norton) and you choose the managed install and specify a...

    New Dell Poweredge Server options

SCSI is higher sustained revolutions per minute. Until all SATA drives start spinning at 10k and 15k respectively, SCSI will always be faster. That's just the raw math. Aside from that, SATA ALWAYS has a lower mean time before failure. So, you're going to be replacing them more often.

    Encryption

Can't tell you the best way. Just be aware that whatever you use, the recipient needs to have relatively the same thing in order to decrypt the emails. For me, I prefer PGP because it's an open standard and more available to the world. With PGP, you can send a message encrypted with PGP, but...

Unable to install RedHat AS-3 on RAID-0 PowerEdge 2850

What update level are you using for Red Hat AS? AS 3 Update 4 or 5 should automatically recognize your RAID array...you should not need any extracurricular drivers upon bootup.

    Reverse Proxy with SSL

    Isn't the following incorrect? Listen 443 Servername host.domain.com ProxyRequests Off ProxyPass / http:100.0.0.1 ProxyPassReverse / http://10.0.0.1 This should be: Listen 443 Servername host.domain.com ProxyRequests Off ProxyPass / http:100.0.0.1 ProxyPassReverse / http://100.0.0.1

    VPN from Terminal Server

Without split tunneling, you won't be able to do it. Without split tunneling, the VPN client will always only allow network access to the network or host it's VPN'ed to...nothing else. That is why whenever you VPN out from the terminal server, your connection instantly drops as soon as you...

    Red Hat vs. SUSE

They are not operating systems: They are linux distributions. I'd go with SuSE. Red Hat pulls some braindead code changes. They changed the unicode support in their last release and it broke python and tcl(programming languages) and caused a sh!t load of other problems." How would that affect a...

    EMail Log Files As Attachments

I would use mutt for that. It's a command-line email client that will allow you to attach a file and mail it. First Google hit for "Mutt" will be the official website of it. It's also the default command-line email client with RedHat 9 and later. Check it out. I do what you're trying to do...

/bin/false not working for FTP only user...

sftp-server is a subset of openssh. You will still have to have an actual shell configured for your account (other than /bin/false or /sbin/nologin) to use sftp-server.
