ssh connections freeze on long displays

Hi all, I've currently got a few Linux servers up and running, all identical installations but for most of them remote connections via ssh freeze when running certain commands such as 'top' or 'll' ('ls -l', or 'ls') on large directories, vim on large files (> a few MB). Since there is ample...

Apache 2.0.53 compiling on AIX 5.1 failing

Hi, I'm trying to install Apache2.0.53 from source on an AIX 5.1 server but the compilation step fails with the message below: " ld: 0711-317 ERROR: Undefined symbol: .MAKELONG ld: 0711-317 ERROR: Undefined symbol: .SetLastError ld: 0711-345 Use the -bloadmap or -bnoquiet option to obtain more...

Mandrake 10 on Dell D500 laptop

No the D500 can't go above 1024x768 but I don't want that resolution anyways. I just want the 1024x768 to display properly as it does in (sigh) Windows. Right now that resolution is only attainable via virtual screen panning. Snr Unix System Admin/DBA Digicel Jamaica (http://www.digiceljamaica.com)

Mandrake 10 on Dell D500 laptop

I did some more research using google and found out I had to install an rpm called "855patch". This sets my Intel 855 chipset to use 16-64 MB RAM (configurable) as by default it only uses 1MB which isn't enough for 1024x768 at anything 8-bit and above. So I'm at the resolutoin I want (even have...

Mandrake 10 on Dell D500 laptop

I tried that driver but it only supports 8-bit which is not very pretty (to say the least). I'm missing something as this same laptop does 1024x768 at 16 or 32-bit in Windows. Any more suggestions? Snr Unix System Admin/DBA Digicel Jamaica (http://www.digiceljamaica.com)

Mandrake 10 on Dell D500 laptop

I'm trying to get Mandrake 10 X-Windows to work at 1024x768 (16-bit or 32-bit rs) on a Dell D500 laptop but have had no success. I have the right drivers (Intel i810 for 855GM/GME ) and tried modifying the XF86Config-4 file but no luck. MEPIS Linux works fine using the 2.4.26 kernel but does...

    X-win session not working

I'm trying to use Starnet X-win32 to get a remote GUI. How do I determine if the Mandrake server is listening for the connection? VNC doesn't work, but I don't think that's setup properly as as yet. Thanks. Snr Unix System Admin/DBA Digicel Jamaica (http://www.digiceljamaica.com)

    X-win session not working

Hi, I'm using Mandrake 10 and trying to get an X-win session on my PC but nothing happens when I try this. I previously got this working on Red Hat 9, but thus far Mandrake 10 is not cooperating. Can anyone offer any advice as to the steps for Mandrake 10 or perhaps logs that I can check to see...

searching for string at column positon

Hi, I'm trying to search for a series of strings in a file (say search.txt has the search strings, one per line and filetst.txt is the file to search in), but I only want to check if the string is in columns 41-51 and if so, write the entire line to a new file. I can't seem to wrap my mind as...

    Inserting space in file

Hi all, I'm trying to insert a single space at column position 53 in all lines for a file but can't quite figure out how to do this. Anybody have any ideas on this please? I'd appreciate any ideas. Thanks. Snr Unix System Admin/DBA Digicel Jamaica (http://www.digiceljamaica.com)

    Oracle talking to other databases

You need a gateway to be able to directly query the Interbase dB from Oracle. Check the Oracle website for details. If they don't have a gateway specifically for InterBase then you can still use the generic connection. Snr Unix System Admin/DBA Digicel Jamaica (http://www.digiceljamaica.com)

    Backup Linux

SAMBA comes with documentation, you can also check the SAMBA site (http://www.samba.org). Setup is very easy and straight forward so you shouldn't have any problems. If you do just you can check the SAMBA forum on this site or make a new post. Basic steps: 1. Install SAMBA 2. Config of...

Looking for advice. Which flavor/version for a home server?

For a newbie I'd recommend Mandrake Linux 10. It's stable, fast and very user friendly. Have used Red Hat in the past but not Fedora as yet. If you mirror your data disk then if one disk fails your system/data will still be available and accessable so there's no data to get back. To get back...

    Backup Linux

You have two options here since I'm assumimg you want to use BackupExec to do the backups for the Linux server: 1. As MrPtt said you can use SAMBA and mount file systems on the Windows Server as regular network drives. This involces no cost, you don't even have to purchase any additional...

8GB RAM not showing for Mandrake 10

Thanks guys. Been very helpful. I recall using the enterprise kernel and seeing 4GB so I rebooted using this and it did indeed pick up 4 out of the 8GB. Would have to compile in the PAE to use it though not sure how to do this as yet. I looked at both Red Hat and SUSE and decided to go for Red...

8GB RAM not showing for Mandrake 10

It's going to house Oracle 10g Application Server, Oracle 10g database (RMAN and EM), and a network management system (NMS). Possibly other software as well if I'm forced to improvise on something. So if I enable PAE the system will recognize the 8GB RAM? How do I enable the PAE? I did not...

Creating a constraint verses Trigger check

Contraint is faster and more efficient as Oracle does the checking internally and the constraint can be deferred and will not become invalid. However a trigger can have funtionality which a constraint can not provide. The ONE ( HP-UX + Solaris + AIX + Tru64 = Unix)

Oracle9i R2 Installation Problems (netmgr, netca)

Can't say I've had any problems installing/running Oracle on either Mandrake or Red Hat, but who knows, I'm about to install 10g on Mandrake 10 now. Assuming your running "netmgr" as the correct user with the correct environment variables, then it seems to be a Java/JRE issue. Have you tried...

    Oracle 9i Developer Suite Installation

Ensure that ALL your tnsnames.ora files are the same. You'll have more than one tnsnames.ora, one under the DB home and the other under the AS home. If the file does not exist under $_HOME/network/admin then create it (copy it from the other location). This should resolve your problem. The ONE...
