i have exacly the same problem. I copy my backups to a disk and that is taken of site. i had to restore a file for someone that was on one of those disks but like with you i was overwriting the data. the catalog fails saying i have to run a inventory then resubmit the catalog?? i have done this...

Just a quick one before i go hunting for the solution.
I have a backup of an old exchange IMG that we store offsite does anyone know how i would catalog this? i had a quick look today but didnt have enough time to go into it.

All you need to back up is the infomation store that is what contains all the data. The reason it is slightly bigger is it contains the public folders to. You will not be able to do disaster recovery if you only back up the mail boxes.
when you look through the restore does say snapshot then infomation store or just infomation store
BE does not support restore of single mail when using vss
where are you trying to restore to looks like you are trying it to another server?

hotfix 11 has solved the problem with attachments all working fine.
apparantly the not overwriting is a design feature of 11d you must set the IMG size to just over the database size for it to overwrite but not sure what you ment to do if your database excceds this limit over time.

You can restore to another server with a difefrent name but it is a nightmare to mount the database, you have to use ESEUTIL to repair it first and that can take a long time to do its thing, depending on the size of the database.

If you are backing up the infomation store you are backing up the users mailboxes
Share point is a website that users can share , create and update documents like word and excel but can be used for loads other stuff
Ok i have now sorted this and is restoring to the main store on my redundent server with out the use of an RSG :) so it seems once you get the data base mounted to the main store on another server you can restore to it no problem!!

No 10d i was able to do it by not creating an RSG, the database would restore straight to mailstore on another server
as long as it was named the same as the original mailstore then just rename the server to exchange server if needed so i had a redundent server sitting there ready.
