I have job that is backing up both the Microsoft Exchange Mailboxes and also the Microsoft Information Store\First Storage Group. Is this redundant?

It seems like there is more data in the Information Store and definitely seems the faster backup.

The Exchange Mailboxes are 44.122G in 13hours 39minutes at 51.4MB/min

The Information Store\First Storage Group is 45.247G in 37minutes at 1138 MB/min

What would be needed for me to restore Exchange data?

All you need to back up is the infomation store that is what contains all the data. The reason it is slightly bigger is it contains the public folders to. You will not be able to do disaster recovery if you only back up the mail boxes.

IF you wanted to restore an individual mail from a store only backup.

Your would have to use microsoft exchange recovery group exmerge, to extract the single mail from the store

backup exec 11d has an option that is suppose to do the extraction for you.

but it doesn't work

just back up single instance and you can restore single mail messages job done!!

Thanks so much for all the help.

I failed to state that this is version 10d. Does that make a difference?
