Hi,

I have been trying to restore a full exchange 2003 server by backing it up on serverA and restore to serverB.

The backup runs fine and has been for a while and i am able to restore messages and attachments now to the original server, but when restoring the whole backup to another server for disaster recovery testing it always errors when i commit.

Is there a problem with this in this version? i will try and use ESEUTIL /cc shortly and see if this works but does anyone know if there is a big problem when playing back the logs?

cheers

Is serverb the same server name, etc?
When you run the backup are you ussing AOFO in the job setup and forcing the backup of exchange to be a VSS snapshot?

Hi Steveot,

The Servers are called different names but the RSG database is from the original server and is named the same.

No Snapshot or AOFO was used just full backup.

Its a pain because now i cannot even get the database on the server without commit ticked and have not changed anything in the restore process?

Cheers for the help

You have to go back to RSG on same server with same name.

so you are saying i cannot restore a database to another server with different netbios names even tho the mailstores are the same name?

if this is the case then backup exec 11d has gone backwards and not forwards as i was able to do this in 10d.

whats the point of having exchange redirect if this is not possible

Your trying RSG right? Why not go back to the same server to make sure it works before trying to re-direct

Are you setting the job for exchange re-direction?

umm restore to the same server RSG could do that i suppose have to check if got enough space.

yeh i have done a full backup on serverA and am able to restore messages and attachments back into mailboxes fine.

so i thought i would test to see if i can redirect the full backup to serverb with the same mailstore names.

I also seem to remember that in 10d i was able to restore straight to the mailstore with out using an RSG on another server?

im sure i will crack it in the end.

i have managed now to restore the mailstore to sever b with out commiting, but now when i use ESEUTIL /cc it errors too so deff seems like there is a problem playing the logs?

cheers for you quick replies by the way

?????

No 10d i was able to do it by not creating an RSG, the database would restore straight to mailstore on another server
as long as it was named the same as the original mailstore then just rename the server to exchange server if needed so i had a redundent server sitting there ready.

iid is different as i am finding out.

Ok i have now sorted this and is restoring to the main store on my redundent server with out the use of an RSG :) so it seems once you get the data base mounted to the main store on another server you can restore to it no problem!!

Just as i thought you could

The hard part is just getting the database on their in the first place
