actually, i take that back. in moss 2007 you can hover > click on the folder menu > ALert Me.
I haven't tried it but that might be what you were looking for. Let us know if that works!

it really depends on why you're wanting to implement wssv3 in the first place. wssv3 is not a full on project management suite, and you'll need exchange if you don't have an email server to deliver messages generated from sharepoint/project.

The Document Center is just a site template with Document Libraries and a tree view. I don't think there's anything special about it.

that functionality is not available out of the box. it can go the other way though, from sharepoint to displaying that calendar in Outlook.
