for instance, I want to delete all files in a directory with the year of 2003. or maybe all files for 2004 between Jan and May?

Create a user with the same username for the local machine. You may need to go into advanced -> users to create the user for the local system. this will allow you to use the same profile, whether you are logged into the domain or not.

Yes, the CD is bootable.. It is a W2K cd.. I have used it many times before. It also cannot be the CD, because I have tried multiple copies of w2k installation cd's and had no luck. I will try cleaning the cdrom drive with a cleaning cdrom that i have.
