All,

I work from a home office. I have a user with limited rights when signed into the office domain. I would like to sign in under the office domain even when the domain is not available. When I am on the local machine, I would like ot have ADMIN rights with this user profile. The reason for this need is because if I sign in to the local machine, I will store all of my settings in a specific manner. If I sign in using the domain I will loose those settings. I need Admin rights to the local machine.

Is there a way to either:
Sign in using a local profile and use the settings for the domain profile, OR
Sign in using the domain profile, but have Admin authority on the local machine only..

I hope I am clear with what I am asking....

Thanks

Mike

Create a user with the same username for the local machine. You may need to go into advanced -> users to create the user for the local system. this will allow you to use the same profile, whether you are logged into the domain or not.

If I have a username of the same name for the domain and for the local machine, will my profile information be the same for both?

I thought that the profile information will be different for both profiles....

No, If you have the same username, 1 for the domain, and 1 for the local system, it will use the profile for the username that is already created for that user. All settings, and files be as if you were logged into the domain.

This did not work. I created a local user with the same name as the domain user. I pointed the local user home directory to the same directory as the domain user. What happened is that two directories were created. The first was /Documents and Settings/msilvers.HBS-INC (this is the doamin name) and /Documents and Settings/msilvers.MIKE-LAPTOP (this is for the local machine). When I signed on as the domain, the desktop and settings were different from the desktop and settings when I signed on as the local name. Also, when I signed on as the domain, and the domain was not available, I did not have admin authorities. I had the limited authorities of the domain user would have. Any other ideas?

Thanks

Assuming you can log on locally with local Administrator privileges, just add your domain user to the Administrators group on the local machine. Run lusrmgr.msc to do this - 2 folders, users & groups, open groups, open Administrators and use Add function.

I ran lusrmgr.msc and went into the administrators group as stated above. The user on the domain is not in the list of users. There is a user msilvers, but it is in the folder MIKE_LAPTOP (the name of the local machine). This profile has been an administrator since it was created. I can not add the msilvers for the domain HBS-INC. Any other ideas???

Can you do this when connected to domain? You should be then be able to select the doamin rather than local machine from drop down box (Look-in). Alternatively, can you just type domain name\user name (HBS-INC\msilvers in your case) in the add box?

It would not let me type in the domain\user name. It would tell me that the entry is incorrect. I logged on to the domain using an administrator profile. I had the option for 'Look In' and I selected the HBS-INC domain. I then selected the msilvers user name in the domain HBS-INC. After I selected that name, when I clicked the OK, it gave me an error that the user could not be authenticated.

Any other ideas?

OK. I think I have it now. What I did not do is add the HBS-INC\msilvers user to this computer. When I added this user to this computer, I was then able to change the authorities of the user to Administrator. I was assuming (I know, I know) that when I was connected to the domain and signed on as HBS-INC\msilvers, the user was created on this local machine. This does not occur. I must manually add the user to this computer. That is why I could not change the authorities.

All is well now (for a short time, I am sure :))

Thanks for all the help!

Mike
