Ive recently fdisked a HDD in order to rebuild the system, and now when I try and boot off the CDROM drive in order to install Windows, The system is not able to boot from the drive (doesnt find a boot record on the windows cd). Is it possible that the CDROM drive is bad, or Dirty? I ask about being dirty because this machine was installed previously in a warehouse environment and it was completely filthy before I erased the drive.

If its not an indication that its bad, or dirty what else is there to try?

PS> I do have the bios set to boot from the CDrom drive. and have tried telling it alternative selections to try, but it doesnt notice the windows cd in the drive.

Thanks
Ty

Quite possible that the CDROM laser is dirty, you can get cleaning disks which I have had some success with. Also could be just the CD itself, you can clean it with a soft damp cloth, or even warm water and a mild detergent. All things are possible except skiing through a revolving door.

Howdy:

Just a thought, but is the Windows cd you are trying to load even bootable??

If it is Win95 and up, you won't be able to boot from the cd-rom, you will have to use a startup floppy.

NT, Win2K and XP should allow you to boot from the cd.

Yes, the CD is bootable.. It is a W2K cd.. I have used it many times before. It also cannot be the CD, because I have tried multiple copies of w2k installation cd's and had no luck. I will try cleaning the cdrom drive with a cleaning cdrom that i have.

Thanks for the help.

Try on another CDROM, I suppose it's very possible it doesn't supoprt booting from CD ?

Hello,

Just a question....have you made sure that your boot
device priority in the BIOS is set to boot to CD-ROM
first?
