    Can't see Lan

That was it. Had failed to run the CD that came with the new mobo. In the past, all my new systems had come up running and I have never bothered with the update CD that comes with some motherboards. What a lesson. Have now done and updated drivers and it is finding the internet just fine...

No response from Win7 install DVD

cdogg, Thanks for that. I have now ordered an upgrade to Win 7 disk, so this may not be over yet. Will let you know how I get on. In the meantime, I will start a new post shortly dealing with this computer's refusal to see the lan or the internet unless I can crack it before I get it written up.

No response from Win7 install DVD

Ben, for a modest consideration....... ;<) David, ran memtest which checked out OK. Trip called off. Have decided that I have spent enough of yours and my time on this. The use of the computer will not be greatly compromised by running XP, so I am just going to install XP Pro and leave it at...

Ben, Many thanks for your guidance. I must go out of town for a few days, but will get onto this as soon as I return.

Using onboard video now, no cards in any slots. Only one HDD and I cannot find any RAID option in BIOS Win 7 64 bit boots on my 64 bit Intel computer just fine. BIOS is set to "Load Fail Safe Defaults" What now, thanks?

No response from Win7 install DVD

Here is an update. I tried upgrading the (commercial CD) XP Pro 32 bit install, using the Non Profit 32 bit XP Pro SP2, and was able to do that. Afterwards I still get the same results with the 64 bit DVD if I click on Setup as earlier mentioned, but if I just click on the D: drive (the DVD) in...

No response from Win7 install DVD

Also, I have now installed XP Pro (32bit) "My Computer" sees the DVD drive and when I right click and press Open, it shows lists the folders and files. But when I click on setup, it gives the error message: D:\Setup.exe is not a valid Win32 application. So the DVD drive definitely works, at...

Ben, Thanks for the step by step guidance which I have implemented, but no cigar. So I stepped through it again. Still no cigar. Same message when I click on Setup.

No response from Win7 install DVD

Burned two copies at slowest speed. One is a straight copy, one is a copy of the image. Neither work. This computer is for a non profit and the DVD's were provided under the MS non-profit support program. I also have a pair of XP Pro CD's, one 64 bit, the other 32 (also from the non-profit...

Creating WiFi using Wimax as signal source?

In fact, ClearWire is the ISP in my case, and I am familiar with the device, called a Clear Spot. But the blinking thing is $125 and very low power (covers one room) and I therefore assume low speed. Since I already have a WiFi router/access point, don't want to buy more (overpriced) hardware...

Creating WiFi using Wimax as signal source?

I am considering a Wimax USB dongle for my laptop which will allow access to the Internet anywhere in the Wimax service area. I would also like to create a Wifi at home using the Wimax dongle as the feed. Would it be possible to use another USB port on my laptop to feed the signal back out of...

    USB thumb drive doesn't respond

I have returned that one for replacement. It will be interesting to see if they do replace it or say it is not eligible because....... (insert reason here.) Thanks for the guidance on static electricity

    NAS gone dodgy!

I am now updating. I have been in touch with Simpleshare (SimpleTech, which is a division/sub/something of Hitachi) tech support. The extent of their meager assistance was to advise that the NAS device uses a file system called "reiserfs" and that it might be possible FOR ME to recover the data...

    NAS gone dodgy!

tlcscousin, if I right click on the netfolder, there is no security tab. When you mention tab, I am wondering if you meant to right click and select "Properties"? If one does that, it brings up tabs but no security tab. Haven't tried that, but as I mentioned earlier, when I click on the new...

    USB thumb drive doesn't respond

I opened a command window and entered: chkdsk F: (F is the drive letter on this windows computer) and got the message: "Cannot open volume for direct access." Is this the correct way to utilize chkdsk?

    NAS gone dodgy!

Thanks for the manual, but so far cannot find anything in it directly related. For info, I have reset the device using a paper clip. The device returned to the same state that it was in before the reset. I am now and have been able to sign into the admin panel using a browser. In the admin...

    USB thumb drive doesn't respond

I have a Kingston 4GB DataTraveler which has stopped responding. If you try to open it in Windows, a message says: "Please insert a disk in Drive (drive letter)" in Ubuntu linux, the message is: "Unable to mount location" "No media in the drive" If I try to format it in Windows, a message...

    NAS gone dodgy!

Thanks. I have considered that, but if there is a less hardware oriented solution, would like to find that before tearing into it. This device has a reputation of being difficult to open.
