Hi everyone. I've got a problem with with Win' XP Pro.

Have a AMD 2000+ proc.

The other day I booted up and when i pressed my logo to log on it went to my desktp for a few secs then the computer reset.

It did this a couple of times on both the users that i have set up.

I then boot in safe mode and this is fine but couldn't find any errors. Eventually I restored to a few days previous and this sorted it out for about a day but then the problem reappeared. I tried doing the restore again but this time the problem didn't clear up

Now I can no longer log in normal mode just safe mode.

Does anybody have any ideas how to fix. If possible I don't want to reinstall (even over the top of the existing install) as it messes up my modem and graphics drivers.

Any help is GREATLY appreciated.

Do you have all the blaster and variant related patches installed from Microsoft?

Keyword search this site for "msblast" to see the temporary workarounds and removal tools available.

I installed the blaster patch a while back ( before the date that i restored to.) I also ran ad-aware deep scan which came back clean so I don't think that msblast is the problem. Also did a full scan with norton protect which came back clean.

In Safe Mode look at your Event Viewer to see what errors are listed at the time of the reboots. Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Event Viewer.

What are the specs on your mobo and what kind of video card do you have? Usually when I come across that problem the video card is just incompatible with the motherboard.

I eventually got this sorted, I used the recovery console to copy out C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\security,sam,default,software and system and replaced them with the same files from C:\WINDOWS\repair.

Then booted up and copied the corresponding files out of a rpfolder where they were called _REGISTRY_MACHINE_SAM.. etc..

went back into the recovery console and copied these into the system32\config folder then booted again.

Hey presto!! Everything was back to the way it was before (Except for a couple of minor things which took no time whatsoever to get back to the previous state)

Thanks for your help bcastner and dcalt :)
