I have a D-Link DI-604 Router/Switch that I have my 98SE computer hooked to. I then wired another XP computer to the switch. I shared folders on each computer for a start. I had a Workgroup and computer name on the 98 and I tried to get the XP to join the 98 workgroup. Seemed to work after both were rebooted. On the XP, I can browse the shared 98 folder with no problem. I can also see the XP share from XP. However, on the 98 I can see the 98 share, and I can see the XP in the workgroup, but when I try to access, i get the "you must supply a password to make this connection" box. Then it lists the XP like so :\\<computer name>\IPC$. I can ping or tracert the XP from 98 without any problem. When I setup the XP for the workgroup I didn't see a place to enter a username or password for a Guest or Everyone. The XP firewall is off. I tried it with simple sharing on and off.. no difference. I tried the XP user password and nothing. I do believe i used a wizard on the XP to get it to join the workgroup. I don't know how to find out if XP really joined the 98 workgroup, or if XP setup a workgroup and 98 joined it. The workgroup was already there in98 when I added XP to the network so I'm assuming (DOH) that XP joined 98. What should I try? Need more info lemme know. Thanks,
Pete

It should work with simplified sharing enabled on XP (as that makes XP's sharing similar to 98s, and removes the password prompt).

The password prompt you are getting is with simplified sharing turned off (XP then acts like 2k & NT on file sharing - ie, you need an account set up on the XP machine which has same user name/password as you use to log onto the 98 machine).

So, I'd just check your settings again on the XP, and change as appropriate (if you need to set up sharing again, I'd do this without using the wizard. As usual, M$ have complicated a straightforward operation by putting a wizard in it).

After checking, if you really are getting a password prompt with simplified sharing disabled, please post back.

The only solution I found (and it works), is from the dos prompt type:

net view \\<ip address>
net view \\<computer name>

Then it will usually show up in network neighborhood, but definately will be found when doing start>>find>>computer

Cool Wolluf, I'll check. I forgot to mention that I have the Start/Logoff button disabled on the 98 computer. I do like a short Start menu! But from what you're saying it shouldn't matter if simple sharing is enabled on the XP. I'll post tomorrow after I check. Plus lemme know if i should unjoin the workgroup and then rejoin without the wizard on the XP. L8r

Simple sharing was enabled. Plus I noticed that the Guest account was disabled. I enabled that and rebooted but I still get the same password box for IPC$. I tried the DOS approach like Dakota said but I get error5. That is the same as the other stating I don't have proper permissions to view the computer in question.
Check out this site and see what you think. It shows the password box I get and then an approach to a fix.
Thanks.

Forgot to mention that I'm using the Windows Logon instead of Client For Microsoft Networks as my Primary Network Logon. also have the Start/Logon box removed from the Start menu. I did it through the registry. No problem to put it back if needed.

What share did you enable on the XP machine? With Simple file sharing enabled, you can only share certain things and as wolluf said, you should not get the administrative share prompt. I suspect that this is where xp is getting confused. Try disabling all the shares on the xp machine, then enable network sharing on the 'Shared documents' folder to see if that cures the problem. Here's some MS info about simple file sharing.
