I have an emachine t2042 with a blank hdd and a windows xp home liscense sticker.

I have an oem copy of windows xp home, (sp2, that didn't come with the machine), and I tried installing it, but it says the keycode on the back of the machine isn't valid.

Does anyone know why? Do I need a certain version of xp to use that keycode?

Thanks,

Erica

The COA key on the machine will only work with an XP Home CD from emachines.

Call them and ask for replacement media. It should be inexpensive.

So if you have a copy just use the COA key from the OEM copy?

Never Say Never (Romeio Void)

Should you purchase an OEM license version of XP?

I have a cd, but it's already been installed with its key on another machine. I just figured that the cds were all the same and I only needed to use the proper key, which is on a sticker on the back of the machine.

I think I'll call up emachines and ask if I can get a cd. If not, I'll probably just buy a copy with a new liscense. It's only 100$ and I got the computer for free.

I appreciate your help.

You can install it without entering the code, you have 30 days to activate it, then you can find the ID.

Two problems:

[li]"I have a cd, but it 's already been installed with its key on another machine."[/li]

[li] The key is not there until it is used for the installation. You cannot "install it without entering the code..."[/li]

Could also be that the key is for a previous SP revision of XP.
