I'm working on a friends pc: xp home sp2 It boots up fine but freezes (mouse doesn't work, keyboard doesn't work, ctrl+alt+del won't work) shortly after I log into any profile. It freezes in both safe mode and regular mode....forcing me to reboot.

AMD Athlon 2400
512M RAM
ECS K7SEM

I installed a known good/larger (400 watt) psu. Voltages look good. I re-seated cpu and heatsink. CPU runs at 40C. I aimed a large fan into the case to eliminate any heat issue. I ran Ultra-X diagnostics on the hardware. Motherboard, cpu, memory hardrive, video card etc all passed. I re-seated all cards, memory and cables. At one point I removed all cards and set it back to on-board video. Didn't help.

I installed a new hardrive and tried to load my W2000. It would lock up during file transfer. I installed a new hardrive cable also....

It's got a Chaintec video card but for some reason it won't show up in Device Manager. This freeze problem occurrs with both the video card and the on-board video.

I went into msinfo32/hardware resources/conflicts sharing. You will notice the Sis Accelerated Graphics Port several times. Am I looking at a memory address and/or I/O port conflict?

Have you posted in the hardware forum too, they might be able to help you?

Are there any errors showing up in the Event Viewer?

Motherboard problems? Can you boot a 9x startup floppy and not have it freeze on you (or try BartPE)

do also a simple check...

Boot up the PC, go into BIOS Setup... let it sit for some time... does it freeze there aswell? if yes, then either your MEM is bad (overheat issue) or the MEM timings are bad...

Load the BIOS defaults, and Save them... then reboot the PC...

Ben

If it works don't fix it! If it doesn't use a sledgehammer...

open the case and see if the CPU fan and fins are dirty
stick a house fan (on high) in front of the open case and then boot up

I really doubt that may work because the damage is already done to the one of the components...but it doesn't hurt to try

heat sounds like your issue.... just so you know once the computer starts doing ANYTHING with a 32bit process it will lock up

This really sounds like a cooked CPU

I used Ultra-X diagnostics on the hardware. The motherboard and cpu are fine. It's not a heat issue. The cpu temp is 41C and the system temp is 40C. I let it sit in the BIOS for a couple of hours. It doesn't lock up. It only locks up after it boots into windows.

Event Viewer reveals nothing of any use.

It really looks like a lot of memory addresses and I/O ports are being shared or are in conflict.

Can someone check their machine? Go to start>run and type msinfo32.exe. Then go to hardware resources, then conflicts/sharing. Do you see a lot of stuff like I posted above or is it clean?

Did you use the hardware Diagnostics (PCI card)?

I use the PHD PCI2 board from the company that makes the ultra-X software and I like it alot...

have you tried reloading windows?

I have seen your problem before and 90% of the time it was the CPU or bad ram (once in a while it was the MB...rare though).

do you have matched ram?...I seen this in dual channel with ram from different lots...try just one ram stick.

the conflict/sharing is normal for the newer boards and windows xp...in the BIOS try isolating the video to its own bank and not sharing with any of the PCI cards

sounds like you have eliminated most of the issues...I hate hairpullers like this

@macten - yes, this is a similiar case like mine, I also have alot of shared IRQ's...

well, having established that the RAM is good... then go to phase two, Run a Spyware and antivirus check on the system... a good DOS based Antiviral is FPROT... for running SpyBot and AdAware aswell as MS/Giant Antispyware, I suggest you either boot into SafeMode, or take the Drive out of the case and hook it up to another PC as Slave and do the check from there, and do not forget to run a CHKDSK of it aswell...

Also you might look at your task manager... There might be some processes running that shouldnt be... Using memory and so on.

These processes may start on startup so goto RUN > msconfig

Under the start up tab disable everything that you dont need to start on startup. Mostly everything then reboot the PC... I have found this to resolve any problems in the past especially if you have alot of spy/ad-ware.

I connected the drive to my laptop through an external hardrive box. I ran Avast, SpySweeper and cwshredder. The drive was pretty clean. Just some home shopping spyware.

firewolf....I just ran the PHD card in Diagnostic mode. I let it run 15 times. It failed once on the 'keyboard controller and keyboard' test. Is the motherboard scrap or can I use a USB keyboard? Probably scrap i would think...

Sometimes the a keyboard error is a false report for another issue ...try other keyboards and yes try a USB keyboard...I found that if you see ANY error on that Diagnostics card you have an issue that may crash the computer (never has it failed me)

the MB ...hmmm! ...that is tough...I try to rule out the MB after I have tested the ram and cpu in another board or different ram and cpu in that board....I have a test MB and test ram and test cpu that I use. MB are cheap nowdays so look for a budget MB that will work for you.

just so you know...when I see failure such as yours to a component ...I suspect there is damage to more than one component.

here is something to try..(wild hair) disconnect all the CD/DVD drives sometimes they create that KB error when they go bad (Weird)

I'm testing through a KVM switch. I don't know if that would skew the test results or not.

I would think that the keyboard controller would be on the MB. That's why I mentioned MB above.

I just rebooted and watched 35 iterations of the test without the keyboard failing. I looked away for a couple of minutes and the keyboard test failed again. So I have no way of telling what part of the 'keyboard controller and keyboard' test it is failing on. When I'm watching, it doesn't fail. Figures....

try direct connection without the KVM and you are right it may skew the test.

good luck.

Hola, once again...

Hmmm... the times that I've seen this kind of prob was either RAM getting hot, and we have established this to be ok, or an OS driver/system file issue...

Run SFC /SCANNOW, to check the system files... if this does not do the trick, then I can only suggest that you reinstall Windows, either as a REPAIR Install or a Clean install...

good hunting...

Ben

If it works don't fix it! If it doesn't use a sledgehammer...

I connected a keyboard directly to the pc and ran the phd card for 175 iterations. It passed the 'keyboard controller and keyboard' test every time. So it looks like the MB is fine....I've got some more pc133 RAM. I'll give it a shot....

I'm sitting here scratching my ear! How did you guys zero in on the hardware so resolutely? Hasn't everything that the machine has been asked to do that is NOT Windows XP worked correctly -- or did I miss something?

I'd try booting from CD; anything and everything from Windows to Virus scanners. And if these don't lockup, I'd close the case and concentrate on fixing a clobbered Windows config.

@ferndoc - plz reread my last post... as I had stated and I quote:

where does it state that it is only hardware and not OS????

Ben

I just installed a new hardrive and tried to install my W2000. It locked up on 'file transfer'. So I think we can rule out any problems with the hardrive.

I installed some 'known good' pc133 ram from another machine. Still locks up.
