I'm working on a friends pc: xp home sp2 It boots up fine but freezes (mouse doesn't work, keyboard doesn't work, ctrl+alt+del won't work) shortly after I log into any profile. It freezes in both safe mode and regular mode....forcing me to reboot.

AMD Athlon 2400
512M RAM
ECS K7SEM

I installed a known good/larger (400 watt) psu. Voltages look good. I re-seated cpu and heatsink. CPU runs at 40C. I aimed a large fan into the case to eliminate any heat issue. I ran Ultra-X diagnostics on the hardware. Motherboard, cpu, memory hardrive, video card etc all passed. I re-seated all cards, memory and cables. At one point I removed all cards and set it back to on-board video. Didn't help.

I installed a new hardrive and tried to load my W2000. It would lock up during file transfer. I installed a new hardrive cable also....

It's got a Chaintec video card but for some reason it won't show up in Device Manager. This freeze problem occurrs with both the video card and the on-board video.

I went into msinfo32/hardware resources/conflicts sharing. You will notice the Sis Accelerated Graphics Port several times. Am I looking at a memory address and/or I/O port conflict?

Yep, and rule out the problem with the OS...

have you changed the IDE cable? and set the BIOS to default values? (just checking to see where you are at)...

If it works don't fix it! If it doesn't use a sledgehammer...

hello
try insertion a RAM stick into different slot, it happenes some times that dusty slot cause a problem in booting, also try to boot using a simple WIN98 SYSDISK created on a Floppy Disk, to see if it goes mad or not, also check the surface of VGA card and clean it aganist dust, it might help;

I installed a new IDE cable. I tried the fail-safe defaults and the optimized defaults. Makes no difference.

It'll boot up with a 98se floppy. As a matter of fact it will run diagnostics all day without locking up. But as soon as it boots into an operating system it locks up.

Here's where I think the problem is: With the display adapter in the machine, no display adapter will show up in Device Manager. Using the on-board graphics, there is no 'display adapter device' in device manager. Seems to me there should be some sort of display adapter in device manager.....

Display adapter is a secondary issue
because you COULD NOT load Win2k. that tells me you have a component failure.
I am firm in that I do not think this is a software issue (provided your CD of win2k is good???)

you at a point of replacing the >>>>CPU<<<< though the MB may be the problem I bet the CPU it the culprit
and here is why I think so.
you have difficultly and crashes when you are in a 32 bit mode in windows (locking up in the file transfer..*windows installer does a multithread at that stage)
Windows 98 and the disks only access the 16 bit mode for most of its operation

you may be right that it is the MB but the safest bet is to replace the MB and the CPU because you have so many indicators of a failure in one or both.
and as for the on-board video issue... it that is tha case then the MB is a bad board and the video will cause problems even disabled

and that is my opinion...

Thanks for all of the responses. I agree that it's a hardware issue. I think she's better off buying a new pc at this point.

To tell the truth... Yes she would...

considering that buying a new combo, one saves the headache from trying to pinpoint the problem...

OK, I have had a similar issue. I have my USB hub, my video card (RADEON) and my NIC all(!) on IRQ 12. Can't change it, thanks to ACPI. Anyway, after trying many theories regarding USB mice, etc., I dropped my NIC back to 10M, half duplex and it seems to have stopped. If it's network related (like FTP lockups) or involves an IRQ shared with your NIC, I would suggest trying this, just to see if it helps.

I'd love to hear from others as to how this works (or doesn't) for them.
