Think of words ending in -gry. 'Angry' and 'hungry' are two of them. What is the third word in the English language?

>I learned more of my words from reading than perhaps the "average" person did, so I was left to learn pronunciation on my own. This means that I tend to pronounce words the way they are spelled rather than the "proper" way, sometimes.

Same here.

Being an avid reader from a very young age, I picked up a lot of my vocabulary that way too. It has led to some embarassment now and then. Who knew that "cetacean" was pronounced "se TA shun" and not "set a SEE un"?

Help us out Paul. We're all a little confused by your last post. Of course, I spell it "HuH?"

THanks,

I think the pronuinciation vs. sight thing goes back to phonics. I learned to read phonetically, so even if I didn't understand what I was reading, I could read almost anything because I could sound it out using phonics rules (though there are always exceptions).

Reading has gone through so many back and forth stages, it's hard to tell what the trend is now.

Great thread, byt the way!

orange - courage
orange - porridge

Do you have a courage
To bite this juicy orange
Add it to your porridge
What a tasty meal!

CrystalStart,

You pronounce orange, courage and porridge in such a way that any two of them rhyme!?!?

Not so bad, my wife is from Shanghai and she writes English phonetically, with a Shanghainese accent. Sometimes she might as well be writtig in Chinese as far as I could read it.
