Think of words ending in -gry. 'Angry' and 'hungry' are two of them. What is the third word in the English language?

Types of rhyme from the Wikipedia.
masculine: a rhyme in which the stress is on the final syllable of the words. (rhyme, sublime, crime)
feminine: a rhyme in which the stress is on the penultimate syllable of the words. (wiki, tricky, sticky)
There are many more categories, like: dactylic, triple, perfect, oblique, etc.

[quote]I guess it depends on how many syllables need to rhyme for the whole word to be considered a rhyme [/quote]

EL - VUR ...... SIL - VUR - hope you weren't aiming that comment at that or I REALLY need to take a happy pill !!! [/white]

<Do I need A Signature or will an X do?>

The two I had in mind were:
Code:
[white]silver
purple[/white]
Which several of you got (including one synonym which offhand I can't think of a rhyme for either).

I'm also wondering about:
Code:
[white]turquoise[/white]

Tracy Dryden

Meddle not in the affairs of dragons,
For you are crunchy, and good with mustard. [dragon]

Code:
[white]I would say that poise rhymes with turquoise.[/white]

Good Luck

Dimandja: you obviously pronounce at least one of those two words quite differently that I do. TO me they're not even close to rhyming.

CC: Yours is as close as I imagine you'll get (at least the way I pronounce it).

You're absolutely right. But, with my accent and "mastery" of English pronunciation, I usually cannot tell the difference.[bigsmile]

Thanks! No wonder nobody knew what I was talking about when I asked: "What's the difference between a dolphin and a porpoise?"

On line 14, done is supposed to rhyme with fun!?
Those rhyme perfectly. Done: 'd&n and fun: 'f&n

Does lozenge rhyme with orange?
See this link for a description of ‘half rhymes’, AKA ‘near rhymes’, which actually uses these exact words as examples.

purple – supple
See the same link listed above.

turquoise – porpoise
What you have here is an 'eye rhyme' or 'sight rhyme'. So named because they look like they should rhyme, but they don't. They are used in poems sometimes, but I don't think they fit the traditional definition of rhyming.

As for the question, "What rhymes with orange", the answer is: Nothing! Here is a link with a description of this riddle. Also pertinent is the same link I’ve already listed twice in this post.

Weird. I have never heard turquoise pronounced with an ending Z. To me it ends with S. Must be a California regional thing.

Hmmm my dictionary shows turquoise pronunciation ending with oiz

tsdragon:

A rhyme for that synonym: Violet - Pilot. I don't think I've ever heard anyone pronounce the 'O' in violet.

Thanks

Sorry, did I say something wrong? Pardon me for breathing which I never do anyway so I don't know why I bother to say it Oh God I'm so depressed - Marvin, Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy

I pronounce the o in violet. I definitely don't say VIE-l&t.

Code:
[white]Silver: The given name of Pittsburgh Pirate great and Hall-of-Famer Willie Stargell("Pops") is... Wilver

Orange could rhyme with a Cockney's door 'inge.

ESquared, I take back my previous post. Must be one of those regional things!

I learned more of my words from reading than perhaps the "average" person did, so I was left to learn pronunciation on my own. This means that I tend to pronounce words the way they are spelled rather than the "proper" way, sometimes.
