When I open a new word document it has these grey upside down brackets in each corner. Then every time I go to close the document it tells me I have "changed the global template normal.dot and asks if i want to save it. I am running windows 2000 and it only does this under 1 particular profile. I have deleted the normal.dot. I have reinstalled Word. I have reinstalled office. It still comes up this way everytime under this one profile. Any ideas?

Do a search for normal.dot (I realize you have done this already) but when you find them, there is probably going to be more than one. Either delete them all, or rename them all, then restart Word.

I suggest deleting all instances of normal.dot that show up.

Hope this helps....

Try going to Tools > Options > Save tab and see if the option to prompt to save the Normal template is checkmarked, you might want to unchec it if it is, then make sure to File > Exit instead of just X out of it so it saves the settings....

If you reopen it and the bracket still appears or if the option was not checked....

I deleted all the normal.dot files and unchecked the save normal template but the same thing happens. It creates a new normal.dot but it still has the l-brackets in all 4 corners. It still only does it under 1 user's profile.

odd... do you have field codes turned on? Under the Tools > Options > View?

You say this happens only to the one profile on the PC? Truly strange. There is an Office Removal Utility which cleans up the registry of all MS Office entries and then allows a true clean installation. You stated you reinstalled, did you remove and reinstall? You might try that first or use the removal utility.

Depending on the version:
Office 2000: MS KB Article #238412
Office 2002: MS KB Article #290301

Good luck.... after this, I'm probably fresh out of ideas...I hope this helps.....

Go to Tools, Options, View and uncheck "Text boundaries"

OH, cool....

Was not aware of that one, so many options, so little.. well COOL.... I'll STAR ya for knowing that little goodie

That is the little grey upside down brackets that are in each corner. When I uncheck "Text Boundaries" the 4 lines that go between the corners disappear but the 4 little brackets stay in each corner.

Thanks to both of you for your help. I am going to do the registry thing. If that doesn't work I am going to just re image the machine.

Thanks Again.

Good article jorzech.... I'm going to look for the corresponding articles for XP tomorrow :)

ladyck3 - thank you. One other thing I found was that if you're running XP - you need to go to Control Panel, Language and remove the Japanese language....odd but I hear it works!
