I am evaluating adding WLAN Handsets to my BCM450. I have a quote back from my supplier for the sets and client licences but additionally I have Avaya WLAN 2245 – IP Telephony Manager equipment and users. Can anyone tell me what role this device plays and if it is required?

For a successful deployment of WiFi handsets, you need to deliver high voice quality, battery life, and call capacity. The 6120/6140 support three methods of achieving this:
- SpectraLink Voice Priority (SVP)
- Wi-Fi Multimedia (WMM) plus WMM Power Save plus WMM Admission Control QoS
- Cisco Client Extensions Version 4 (CCXv4).
There is an excellent resource guide on QoS and the Spectralink 8020/8030 (which are equivalent to the Avaya 6120/6140 and Avaya 3641/3645) at
The 2245 provides support for SVP. If you have a WLAN infrastructure which supports only SVP, then you would need the 2245 to provide acceptable service. If you have a WLAN infrastructure which supports WMM or CCXv4, then you do not need the 2245. Spectralink also publishes configuration guides (which can be found at on how to properly configure various WLAN vendor equipment to work with the 8020/8030 (and can be used for the Avaya 6120/6140/3641/3645).

I am not sure that answered my question.

More confused now.

Summary:
- You need a QoS mechanism to provide acceptable voice performance on the WLAN.
- If your WLAN supports either WMM or CCXv4, then you do not need the 2245.
- If your WLAN does not support WMM/CCXv4 but does support SVP, then you do need the 2245.
- If your WLAN does not support XMM/CCXv4/SVP, then be ready for lots of complaints about performance.
