We have recently upgraded our Compaq ProLiant 1600 server from NT4 to 2000 by means of a fresh install. Now with 2000 server, the utilization can be very high (eg making a copy of a folder on the same drive from the server itself pushes the utilization to around 90-100% and deleting the copied folder pushes it to 100%). This did not happen with NT4. We have tried swapping out the memory with known good memory but the problem still occurs. Also, intermittently (it has happened 3 times in the last 3 weeks), the server stops responding to all requests. It can still be pinged but not seen in Network neighbourhood. The only way to solve this is to reboot the server. Nothing appears in the event log and the server has been patched with the latest Microsoft and Compaq patches and has all the latest network and video drivers installed.
Any help you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

What Service Pack are you running on W2k?

Also, what firmware are you running? -----------------------------------------------------

The server was running SP2 but we have just upgraded to SP3 in an attempt to fix the problem.

All firmwares (BIOS, SCSI controller) are updated with the latest from Comapq's website

The server currently has 640Mb of RAM

I had the exact same problem with a PL 7000...as long as I did not load any Compaq drivers from the Compaq Support Paq, the server never had any problems. Of course for this to work your SCSI Device will need to be supported natively by 2000.

thats correct. dont install unnecessary support paq from compaq unless you have a complete range of compaq network servers and terminals around and want to use fully compaq pre-failure warranty. these files will load as services and drained memory resources heavily. server agents and driver agents usually are the main cause of this unnecessary load. if you plan to use the server with other non compaq terminals and servers or want to use it as workstations, uninstall all support paq. in my experience w2k run a lot faster without those support paq.
