ESS ES56CVM Data Fax Voice Modem

After reinstalling Windows XP by upgrading. I have been running Xp for 1 1\2 years on this machine. Now I get a Juno Web prompt saying:

"Microsoft Windows does not have any modems listed for this computer"

I have un-installed the modem and reinstall it. I have deleted the modem from the System Properties/Device Manager/Modem/Ess ES56CVM Data Fax Voice Modem and let the computer find it, with it does and still no help.
When I go to Start/Control Panel/Phone modem Options/Modems, I see:

The following modems are installed:
Communications cable between two comp.. COM1
ESS ES56CVM-PI Data Fax Voice Modem COM8

How can I make the computer find the modem?
like I have said I have had XP running and working fine for over a year and a half. I thought that maybe the ESS drivers changed so I downloaded the driver for XP again, but no luck.
PS, I just looked at Device Manager/Ports(COM & LPT) The communications port is listed (COM1),but nothing about the modem (COM8).

Try uninstalling the modem from device manager, reboot and reinstall it again. You may want to remove the data cable you have connected from one PC to the other until you get the modem working.

Do you need the Cable Modem installed? Is this just a crossover cable connection between two serial ports on different machines?

I went to Add Hardware Wizard and clicked already connected the hardware. Found the ESS ES56CVM-PI Data Fax Voice Modem listed. Highlighted it and clicked next. Here is the current status of the Hardware.

This device is working properly.

But still Windows doesn’t recognize it.
And like before now that I reinstalled it the COM has moved to 9 from 8 which was 7 and before that 6 and so on… I know When I get the modem working I'll set it back in Advanced Port Settings in Device Manager.

NJDEV1K, Sorry, I lost the come back. Yes, no luck and I un-installed a couple of times without the cable connected

Linney, this is a crossover network cable. I unplugged it and no help.

I'd try another modem or remove un-necessary boards. I'm curious why the modem isn't installing on Com 2-4. I've also seen where some modems wouldn't function unless they were on com 2-4.

Micker, when I look at in Advanced Port Settings those ports are all in use, but that seems to the way it is after I reinstall. Those ports are not showing there free. Should be free. It move to COM 9 now and says 8 is in use.

But Windows shows that the modem is there and working fine.

try uninstalling the modem turn off the computer and swich slots that your modem is plugged into. turn on the computer and windows should notify you that there is new hardware installed on the computer and need to locate software drivers for it.

Criado, this is a Laptop with a built in modem.

Results for Query Modem.

Is it a 16 bit modem??
I just had a similar problem with a "SIERRA AIR CARD"
It is PCMCIA for laptops but the problem might be the same.

It could be IRQ sharing for 16 bit pc cards.

IF you can disable PCI routing for the card you may be able to install it.

I have no further info at this time but I hope this may point to the right direction.

Sorry the Query is not the one, this maybe better.
