Still need a few more details. So when you lose the connection icon (i'm assuming this is a dial up connection?), the computer freezes? Or is this a separate problem. Please list any and all conditions under which the OS freezes, and other problems separately.

hi matt. 1)icon problems appear to be seperate
2)rarely, double lrft-clicking a shortcut does not start an application BUT clicking "OPEN" from the right-click menu DOES start the application. 3)one type of hang is when using FAVOURITES,trying to delete a group entry e.g. MEDIA,LINKS.ie an item that "contains" other items.there are other cases but i cant remember them in detail.
all of these may not be associated of course.
regards Barry
4. Run MSCONFIG, go to startup tab, uncheck all background applications that you don't need launching at bootup.
Try it out...
