Windows 7 "Start windows normally" behaviour

Can't see a specific forum for Windows 7 so I post this odd question here because obviously the learned still inhabit this forum.

If I switch off my Win7 32 bit machine prematurely I usually get the normal message to either start in safe mode of "Start windows normally". If I do nothing it eventually starts automatically but takes about 300 seconds to do this.

I seem to remember in my old computers it was usually about 30 seconds.

When I check Computer properties, the two delay settings there are 30 seconds.

Is there perhaps somewhere else this "Start windows normally" delay can be changed?

Sounds like some piece of startup software is having a problem. Try this to start with (scroll down for the W7 info):

Fixed
I simply changed the normal setting in Computer/Properties/Advanced to 10 seconds and it fixed it.
It had been set to the default of 30 seconds but for some strange reason was taking 300 seconds (as indicated in the counting down number on the windows DOS screen)

Re Windows 7 forum, it is not showing on the menu on the left hand of the main tek-tips site although previous versions of windows (95 to XP)are showing. That's why I assumed there was none.

The left hand menu of this Tek-Tips site shows many other forums that I have never joined or visited so why not the Windows 7 forum?
In any case, how otherwise do you ever find out that there is a Windows 7 forum in the first place?

The left-hand menu only shows forums that you have joined. Merely reading a post in a different forum (perhaps from a link in a post) will cause you to be auto-joined to that forum.

Curious. I'm afraid that doesn't 'compute' because I have never read many of them.
Then how do you explain how I ever got to know there was a vb6 forum (or any other for that matter) in the first place?

From the front page? From the Forum Directory? From the search screen? By following a link to it? Who knows?

It may not compute, ted, but that's the way this site works.

Now, if I did not now mention that that is actually in the ASP.NET forum you might not have noticed. But what you will now notice is that Microsoft: ASP.NET has now been added to your forum's list on the left hand side.

I'm curious how you chose that particular thread. The only thing noteworthy that I see there is an illustration of how overrun a site claiming to be "for professionals" is with script kiddies.

It was just the first example from a quick search where I found of a thread in another forum that looked from the title like it might be from this forum, thus someone following the link might not realise that they were being redirected to that other forum (and thus not realising that they would be joined to that different forum). For the purpose of the example I couldn't actually care less about the content of the thread.

Not wishing to deeply offend anyone but say a new person was to try to join a forum on this site, are you saying that the first time they typed in tek-tips.com, no forums would be listed at all?
If this were the case if a third party recommended the site as a "good site", how would they ever know there was a vb6 forum that they could join in the first place?

I seem to remember I found this site by accident when I was searching for the answer to a problem.
Google, pointed to a tek-tips page that had the same question I asked which didn't by the way have the answer.

Are there perhaps more variants of tek-tips forums concerning vb6 that I don't know about and have missed all these years because of this feature?

No. As I said in my post of 13 Nov 15 12:27 there are a number of ways of being shown forum lists.

Dunno. Can't see your forum list. Perhaps you could try one of the links I provided in order to seek out forums that interest you.

I saw the light when I noticed the title to the Forum's columns is "My Forums"
I had wrongly assumed it was indicating all possible existing forums.
Why some of them are there at all is a mystery as I have definitely never visited any of them or seen them mentioned in a post.

My original point is still not clear, is there in fact a Windows 7 forum and if so how do I add it to "MyForums"?

Maybe there is a forum I am missing named "VB6 programmers with D cups"?

That is exactly my point.
It would still appear that if you had never sent me a link to the Windows 7 forum, I would never have found out that one even existed.
Because I opened Tek-Tips from the links on the email I received regarding your post, I was not logged on when I read the Win7 forum posts. When I logged on to reply in the Vb6 forum, the Win 7 forum was still not therefore on "myForums" list.

Only goes t6o show no matter what is done in programming, holes eventually seem to appear!

No matter how clever the programming, how on earth do you expect to tek-tips to add forums to tedsmith's personal forums list if you are not logged in (or have otherwise somehow identified yourself to the site) as tedsmith? That's not a hole. That's you expecting software to be prescient.

By the way, presumably you've never ticked the 'Remember Me' box when logging on (it's about the only cookie the site uses) since, if you had done so, accessing through a link in email would have logged you in.

Again, I have provided several links from which you could find that out. We'll pretend that the front page and the forum directory are somehow impossible to find - but you surely must be aware of the search feature, which is available from the top of every page on the site ...

I am not criticising Tek-Tips. They are a great site and of immense help to many people. I was really putting this forward as there could be others who make the same misinterpretation as I did.

Maybe the "hole" is the inability to understand how different minds can misinterpret things.

As I said I wrongly assumed that the list was a menu of what Tek-Tips was offering and not what I had looked at.
I never noticed it was merely only Tedsmiths forums.

I could never find a list of all existing forums and concluded there was not one there so I didn't search for it (the classic search dilemma).

I notice with the current information overload, there is a trend in sites to not show a true main menu like in a book. You often have to navigate through many menus, sub menu pages and search boxes to find out what you want which can be frustrating.
I suspect this is a byproduct of people trying to divert and sell you something you didn't intend to buy.

I ALWAYS delete all cookies when I close the browser, the only safe way.
