I tried to install Windows 2000 Workstation on a new computer with the following hardwares:

CPU: 800EB/256/133/1.7V
Motherboard: ASUS CUSL2 v1.02
Memory: 256 MB non-ECC
CD-ROM: 2 CD-ROMs
Modem: 3Com 56K WinModem
Harddrive: Western Digital 30 GB

The Problem: Each time I tried to install Windows 2000, it freezes. The point that it freezes is when after it probes and loads the device drives and copies necessary files, it tries to start up Windows 2000 to finish up the rest of the installation.

What I've done:

- Double checked my CPU settings
- swapped in/out CD ROMs
- changed memory
- swapped in/out HD

and it still freezes. Does any know what's causing this freeze? Is it hardware or software problems? I believe that I have met the minimum hardware requirements.

If you haven't already, physically yank out, or disable in BIOS, ALL devices except the video card, hard drive, and CD. Then try reloading and see what happens. If you can get Win2k to come up, start adding devices back in one by one.

Done that too. The system is almost bare minimum. If you look at my hardware list from above, the only two devices that I can take is the 3Com modem and the 2nd CD-ROM. The rest are needed.

If you haven't taken 'em out, do it - or at least the WinModem. PnP can do some funny stuff.

It is possible for brand new machines to have hardware problems (from personal experience). If you have tried it with the modem & second cd-rom yanked and it still doesn't work, I would blame a faulty motherboard or CPU. One other idea; make sure your internal components are staying cool enough. I've seen systems run fine for a while (long enough to get well into setup) and then hang consistently due to a cooling problem (CPU, video, or even hdd).

Try a bios update from the Main Board Manufacturer.

Your problem is probably with the ACPI settings. You can try changing (as mentioned) the cmos settings.

Disabling everything will most likely prevent w2k from starting.

Legacy sound and modem settings in bios can cause this.

But, I have seen this a lot and a few times the PNP settings and the power saving settings in cmos corrected the problem.

Most cases the the problem is that the bios is not ACPI compliant with W2K.

Since it is a new system I would take it back where I got it or at least call them, sounds like it should be their problem.

Still getting the problem, but will try to work on it. I've tried to update the BIOS but the aflash.exe program that updates the BIOS won't update the BIOS because it can't detect the type of Flash memory. On the Motherboard, it clearly say that it is AWARD. The error is: Flash Memory Unknown.
