Windows 98 starts up in Safe Mode only.

Initially, I received the following blue-screen error message;
"Invalid VxD dynamic link call from VSDATA95(01)+00014EE8 to device "0028", service 800. Your Windows configuration is invalid. Run Windows Setup progam again to correct this problem"
The only way to get to any kind of control prompt was to use a bootable floppy.
After running the setup program (twice) I now receive the error message;
"Windows Registry or System.INI refers to this device file but the file no longer exists."

The file name reported is "dfs.VxD".

Please, please help!

109driver,

vsdata95 refers to Zonealarm, I believe.

Have you recently installed or uninstalled a program?

To fix the dfs.vxd error, you'll need to remove, then re-add all your networking components in Control Panel>Network.

If you are having no connection problems, you can export, then delete the dfs key under:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD

Hello, 109driver.

reghakr provides all the necessary elements to fix the problem.

[1] As you still can boot to safe mode, my opinion is to use Add/Remove programs in Control Panel to Remove the Zone Alarm. And you can reinstall Zone Alarm after the problem is fixed. Mskb ref is :

Upon reboot, if the problem persists, continues to [2].
[2] From safe mode, delete the entry StaticVxD under the key analytically expressed in the .reg file below.

;----below this line----
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\dfs]
"StaticVxD"=-

;----above this line----

You can directly merge the above .reg file or inspect and delete by hand in the registry of the appropriate entry. ("=-" above is "=" followed by a minus sign "-")

[3] Open up system.ini and locate line referencing to vxd with dfs, and put a semi-colon in front of the line to comment the line out.

[4] Reboot, see the problem is corrected. If yes, then reinstall the network adapter component. And reinstall ZoneAlarm.

reghakr and tsuji

many thanks - I'm back up and running.
Only addition to the above was to re-install the original graphics drivers as for some reason the only ones left on my machine were lo-res 16 bit drivers.

best wishes
