Win98 lockup...

a co-worker is having problems...Win98SE, no special applications other then SPSS (not a problem)...450mhz system w/128 mb RAM.  System just lock's up for no apparent reason at various times.  It happens with various applications open, so can't track it to one specific one.  Today it happened w/ Excel, Netscape, and Netscape Messenger open other times its other applications, once the screen saver started, the system crashed.  It happens whether or not the screen saver is on, so thats not a solution...any ideas for tweaking???  The user is pretty much ruling out the reloading of the system so far...Any ideas would be appreciated....

What brand of computer? In our office we have a Sony VAIO that acts exactly like this.  Other machines with same configuration seem just fine. We have tried reloading the system with no improvement.

The system is a Dell.&nbsp;&nbsp;I removed 2 items from the startup in the system configuration utility.&nbsp;&nbsp;As of yet the system is not locking up on her, I'm keeping my fingers crossed since the problem is one that was consistent for her.&nbsp;&nbsp;We are going on close to 5 hours without a lockup....still praying though <br>The files that I removed from the startup are the 2nd instance of &quot;LoadPowerProfile&quot; and &quot;dRMONSmartAgent&quot;.&nbsp;&nbsp;If you try this, let me know how it works out...

We were having the exact same problem. We changed out Power Save settings within the Control Panel to never come on and this has solved theproblem. We were also using Dell Computers

We, by default, disable power management before installing new systems.&nbsp;&nbsp;But, ever since making the changes to the Windows configuration, the user has had no further problems...actually says the system is running better then before...Thanks for all the input...

You may try going to <b>Find:&nbsp;&nbsp;All Files </b>and type in <b>*.tmp </b>in the named field then look through the entire C drive.&nbsp;&nbsp;These <b>.tmp </b>files tend to lock a PC up when there are excessive numbers (over about 75).&nbsp;&nbsp;When deleting these you may get a message that a certain <b>.tmp </b>file is a program.&nbsp;&nbsp;Always choose &quot;NO&quot; (you don't want to delete this file).&nbsp;&nbsp;After deleting these files, empty your Recycle Bin.&nbsp;&nbsp;Many times this will take care of the locking up problem and also speed up your system.&nbsp;&nbsp;
