Hello,
I am trying to get some things under windows 2000 RRAs to work but since I am new to it I need some help. I am currently using ICS under windows 2000 server to share an internet connection. Now I dont like having to keep a user logged in to keep the internet connection alive. I have tried to use NAT but I cannot even get the internet to work locally on the server lat alone over the network.

I have Verizon DSL which uses PPPOE to establish a connection. I am using a PPPOE protocal called RASPPPOE ( RASPPPOE allows me to use it as a demand dial adapter under RRAS and I can get it to connect and obtain an IP address but thats about it. I have tried to get NAT to work using a Microsoft guide but its extreamly simple and has no detail whatsoever. I can get an IP address with the demand dial connection but even locally on the server I cannot get onto the internet. I cannot ping websites using there IP's either. its as if the connection isnt seen by anything other than RRAS.

To me it looks like I need something else other then adding the servers NIC and DSL demand dial adapter to the NAT protocal adapter list. Anyone know hot to solve this problem? Thanks.

Several things:
a) Have you turned off ICS? - you'll get all sorts of problems if you try and run this with RRAS
b) Try setting up internet connection sharing using the RRAS wizard - it'll make a good stab at it.
c) To get to the internet you will need to set up a static route - assign it to the WAN modem, IP subnet 0.0.0.0 and mask 0.0.0.0. The Wizard will do this for you which is why I suggest try it first.

I use a Linksys Cable/DSL router at home and a Sonicwall SOHO-3 at work to do the PPPOE, DHCP, and firewalling.
The linksys was only $80 and the Sonicwall was $540 but supports VPN.

I am having the same difficulty as ThaddeusW (TechnicalUser)

I cannot understand a,b,c. If someone knows how to be a little more specific. that would greatly help!! --tks

Hi,

Same kind of problems... plus I don't know why my wan modem is not listed among nic cards in the wizard :-(

Any links to a successful setup how-to ???

Cheers,

Grunt

michael976 :

if you had internet connection sharing enabled on your modem, then you should disable it first. If you do not understand, maybe it is becasue you had not activated ics before, so this does not apply to your problem :)

everybody :

I found this... not far from here (feel stupid because it is straightforward to look a faq's first) :

...will try it and tell what happens.

Cheers,
