Why was the 400 series replaced 3

I was just curious does anyone know why the 400 series cabinet was replaced with the 500 series V2 cabinet? I would think they would have just continued to build on the same platform and just keep releasing new software versions? I mean it looks like the entire design of the cabinet even the color and faceplate was changed.

The white cabinet seems to have more of a style to it rather than this black box. You can hardly see the AVAYA logo on it. It just looks like any old switch.

Does anyone know the history behind this change?

Thank you!

To match their S8XXX series.
To allow for internal power supplies.
To allow for removable cards and a new backplane. They had to redesign the whole thing, so why not change the color to be more homogenous with the rest of their product line?
Also, the beige cabinets tend to discolour over time.
Also, it's not black...it's more of a charcoal.

The hardware was just not powerfull enough and the IP500 chassis is good.

It was going to be white (I did see one at a Disty), but then the corporate machine kicked in and changed it to Avaya Grey.

I like the 500 design. Much more flexible than the 400's. I just wish we could use one as an expansion cab rather than being stuck to pre built 400 style units.

I wish the IPO hardware was Avaya Red. It looks too much like Cisco equipment (especially the ERS line of switches)

Jamie, i have thought about that idea too.
Why not a IP500v2 chassis where do can put in 4 DS8 or 4 Phone8 cards or a mix of that.

BAZINGA!

The big problem I have is the wall mounting. Unlike other systems the connections and the visual indicators are really not easy to look at at a glance because either they are upside down if the unit is mounted face up or you have to stoop down to look at or work on if the unit is faced down.

Do you guys have a better way to mount it on the wall if it is not mounted in a rack? The IT guys tend to not be very respectful of the Telco stuff if they are using space in the same rack. It is like a bad marriage or roommate relationship!

How about sideways?

I usually do them sideways. I always assumed that was how they were supposed to go based on the design of the wall mount kit.

not arrogant, just succinct.

Inside the package you will find the instructions, looks like this for the old mounts:

Same directions for the new wall mount too, and the main reason for having them like this: Cooling!
If you have the front facing upwards, the heat from the power supply will be trapped and your cards will have a much shorter life.

Kind regards

I would like to see a new expansion module exactly like an IP500. Custom configure an expansion module with 16 digital ports and 16 analog ports.... Would be nice.

Easy enough to do.
Just buy a few IP Offices, config how you like, link them together with SCN! :)
BAM Custom expansion modules :p

That will cost a lot of money.. and next to that it will be expensive too....

:)

No, not really.
If you need 16 Analogue/16 Digital stations, a SCN setup would only be 4% more expensive.
For those 4% you get resiliency, well spent money if you ask me.
Spread the SIP trunks evenly on the two systems and you need VMPro (who doesn't [smile])

Kind regards

What is wrong with wall mounting is expansion. You have to trick the brackets to make them fit, and the exp cables get too short for the second exp and you have to use patch cords.

Avaya says it wont support if you dont use provided cables, but never had any problems. F Avaya and their "support" anyway...

Bad design all around. Make them wall mountable all the way or not at all

the problem with that is that the IPO has 30 channels for each expansion module (ergo the max of 30 extensions) which will allow every extension on that module to be on the phone at the same time, if you make it customizable then you can go over that limit and run the risk that there are users that are unable to make a call even if there are line resources available.

More than 1 unit wallmounted is ugly. Anything more than the processor I insist on a 19" wallmount bracket to make sure that the units are properly connected. We had actually a case where the system behaved erratic due to a patch cable that was not the 1 m shielded cable supplied with the system. The customer replaced it with a 7 Ft patch cord and some phones had issues (volume issues, dropped calls, voicemail problems) and not only the phones on that expansion unit. Took forever to find because it was in a 4 post cabinet hidden away.

Nasty stuff when you have 8 expansion units with wire management between them because then you need to mount part of them above and some underneath the IPO otherwise your cables are short. Like you said yankblan bad design.

We nail the IT guy(s) to the wall and install the IPO in the 19" rack.
Only in those occassions there is no 19"rack we wall mount the IPO, usually only in very small configs without expansion cabinets.

LOL @ needing to mount expansion modules on a wall... that will look like a BT hatchet job for sure.

How much does a small wall mount cabinet cost these days? Not much!!!

Just use sticky tape and stick it to the IP500 :)
I think that, if you do it right, you can easily stick 6 on to it without falling of.
But indeed a little cabinet is the way to go.
And even a small cabinet can be wall mounted with sticky tape (been there and done that)
