Get a slave-wage entry job and build up some experience. Worry about certifications down the road.

Certifications are problematic right now.

Two years ago, you could take a boot-camp, get a cert, and walk into a job. Since there was a lot of money floating around, employers could take bigger risks on new employees.

Since then, the economy is slower and the money is tighter. Employers want experience -- they need to minimize risk by finding new employees with proven track records.

And the value of certs is starting to water down. There are too many boot camps pumping out too many certified slugs -- everybody and his grandmother is getting certifications now.

That's not to say that some certifications aren't bucking the "watering-down" trend. For example, Cisco and RedHat require you to pass hands-on labs to get the cert -- they don't just expect you to regurgitate whatever you crammed the night before.

But employers don't know all this. They just hear the horror stories from their fellows.
