When subform is blank

How can I force a 0 qty in a subform that is blank?
I use the main form with field name: TOTAL SHIPPED and a subform to capture part shipments as they occur and show a subtotal in my main form.
Trouble is records without SHIPPING details show in my reports as BLANKS. I need to get a number so that my report will calculate Balance to ship. which is qty-total shipped.
