I am wiring a new building for voice and data using cat3 and cat5e. This is a first for me so be easy! My customer wants to use 3 big screen Plasma HDTV's to use as monitors for the computer network. I have placed, as reccomended, a cat5e and a RG6 to each computer location back to the phone/data room. Will this work for the monitore. I am just placing the wire for the computers, someone else will be doing the networking. Thanks in advance for your help.

Um, you should be running cat 6 everywhere. Additionally they should be using LCD's for monitors and they connect to the computer via a VGA cable, not RG6.

brianinms Cat 6 has very few advantages over Cat 5e. (It is 10 gig capable for under 37 meters, which can be important in a server room but is not generally useful. Cat 6A will be the useful spec, someday) I missed the parts of the question where Cat 6 will help.

aftermite Assuming the TVs are already purchased, you need to find the manuals online to find how the vendor recommends using them as monitors. (VGA, HDMI, DVI or Component all all choices. The vendor should know which is correct)

I tried to remain child-like, all I acheived was childish.

I will concede the difference between cat 6 and 5e, however everything should then be run as 5e... no Cat 3 for a new install.

If you run a HDMI cable for each monitor, then ensure each PC has a video card with a DVI connection, then you can get a DVI to HDMI adaptor plug.
I've found this gives better video performance over the VGA connection. I still do not understand why they would put a VGA connection on a large format display, like greater than 30".
There are also DVI to HDMI cables available, you can order to length.

We've connected PC's this way for our Netowrk Operations Center. We've hung several 40" LCD monitors from the ceiling and connected direct to the DVI connector and the video is very good.

The cost of cable these days are not that far apart for cat3 and cat5. Why not use cat 5 or better everywhere? This is actually the way most interconnects are doing it these days.

We all need a little help once in awhile. Tony the Phoneman..

In this video application running plenty of cat5e is a good idea. With adapters (baluns) almost any sort of AV signal can be carried over several cat5e cables. If you are going to try to run high def video over RG6 you will need at least 3 for the video.

I am generally opposed to running "disease of the year" type cables (SVGA, DVI, HDMI, Et al) since they can travel on coax or twisted pair.

cat 3 while the same price as 5 is easier /faster(cheaper) to terminate

Do a search for rapid run cables. They come in varing lengths and you can purchase differnt ends depending on what the connection between the pc and monitor. Have used them before pull fast and HD connections. Just make sure you know which ends to purchase.

You could have at least run dual 5e's to each workstation. I mean heck, I live in Mississippi and I don't see any cable install crews or phone guys run anything less than 5e. Heck I wouldn't even extend an analog line in my house with Cat 3. I am still missing the purpose of the RG6 to each workstation.

I wouldn't even extend an analog line in my house with Cat 3.

so you have a signal thats traveled miles over Cat nothing but somehow its going to benefit by cat5 over cat 3 for the last 75 feet ?

would you drive to a grocery store in anything other than a vehicle capable of traveling 145 mph ?

What are you guys paying for cable anyway? My last order was $110 plenum cat3, $180 plenum cat5e. $70/box is a big difference in my opinion. We never terminate voice to a patch panel (usually 110 block) so the voice cable wouldn't be usuable for data even if it was cat5. Just curious since there were several "cat3/cat5 are the same price" comments in here.

lopes where are you getting Plenum 5e for $180? I just bought some and it's around $300. Hey if you know a secrect please fill us all in on it.

I was at a event a few weeks ago and the acu-tech rep was there , I got a nice hat and spiffy water bottle and some catalogs
I hadn't called him yet but you can be sure I will

Thanks all for your suggestions. The computer guy and I met at the site and what I placed is what he needed. There are several ways to accomplish this and all is fine. Again, thanks as I was worried since the building is to be all sheetrock and they plan on starting tomorrow!
