You might want to take a look at Nagios as well. It is free, and a lot of datacenters use it. Open Source Labs at Oregon State use Nagios, for example. You didn't mention OS, so I'm guessing Linux is okay? Nagios requires Linux.

You can get notification alerts by mail or your preferred IM...You can use Visitor Tracking service to count your clients and also it has great design and friendly interface. So it's really great service, just try it!
We use a combination of Nagios and Cacti. Nagios is great for availability monitoring and alerting whilst Cacti is great for historical performance data.
