I am a systems administrator who also supports our PBX and I am trying to find a job title that incorporates both of my primary functions at work. Looking on the web doesn't yield much information though so I came to the source. I thought about converged telecom engineer but I was thinking that there might be an industry title out there already that maybe I am not aware exists. Any information that you have regarding matter would be great. Thank you in advance for any information provided.

In my previous position I was the Senior Systems Administrator but that covered both data and voice. It was recommended to me by a headhunter that I use the following:
Voice Network Operations Specialist
Success. I decided to walk away from the boring data (LAN/WAN) world and focus on my true love, call routing and contact center operations. My new title is Contact Center Consultant. Pretty much covers it all!!

Since i do a bunch of stuff here, i have a few titles...
These were conferred:
"The Phone Guy" (of course)
"MOTU" (Master of the Universe) Personally i think that's a bit too much responsibility, i don't need that kind of pressure and my salary certainly doesn't reflect it.
When asked, i use my own title:
"Vice President in Charge of Anything You Want Me to Be Today" Management shot down that one cause it would fit well on a business card.
Anyway... titles are highly overrated and incredibly confining!

I told my boss I want the title - Converged Media Engineer.
I do TDM voice, VoIP (H323 - SIP), IP Telephony Apps, Video and Data/Networks.
I keep hearing voice and data are "Converging".
I am responsible for multiple "media"s streams.
And your job title should include "Engineer"
But everyone calls me "phone guy"

I got into managing PBX because 20 years ago I designed a computerized system to replace mechanical counters in the CO to time toll-free number. Then when I changed job the guy interviewed me said "you know something about phone heh!". To be honest, I know -48VDC, tip & ring, line reversal but no more than that. I got the job as Electronic Systems Engineer and managed Dimension 2000 together with my other duties then switched to System 75 & Audix.
Today, in another company, I manage Avaya PBX & VM and Cisco Network for about 1000 users. Title is Network Engineer.

You are telling your age now. As long as I have been in this forum, I dont think I have heard the words "Dimension 2000". I too started on one, but I was a kid then. LOL

I have you both beat on age, I was a switchboard oper. on a Bell Dimension console back when they were IT. We still had a plug board in the building next door! I think I'll keep my new title I gave myself in a previous thread since I can't use phoneguy.

I think I can beat that. Was a PBX installer for Illinois Bell and installed 701 and 740 step PBX's, 756, 757 and 770 crossbar PBX's. I cut my teeth on 1A key equipment. Installed 800 series PBX's, Dimensions, System 75's, etc, etc, etc. Current title is Telecomunications Specialist but I prefer Doctor of Dialtone.

Well just recently I was called the "Phone Stud" but I have also been called "Big Daddy". Of course associates in our department have also been called some pretty explicit names, but this site is not x-rated so I wont go there.
I like to think of myself as a Telecom FUNgineer, but oddly enough, no one else does...
